Having lived for many years in both, I can with certainty that NY prices are NOT cheaper on virtually anything. Also keep in mind in NY there is no tax on clothes so that is like saving an additional near 10% on everything you buy. And as any other major purchases you can go to NH where there is no tax on anything! But as others have pointed out, you also would need to factor in the outragous gas prices etc in your "savings."
So I would, and do shop, when I go to NY to visit old friends, but I wouldn't make a trip to do it (moreso because I can't see how it would be cheapers). But it's an easy trip to make.
ETA Killer didn't understand/read what I said, and I'm 100% right (or at least 98% lol). NY is the state with the high tax NOT MA...we don't have one here. I do agree if you are having a hard time finding something you must have, then it's worth a trip to the City, because you find everything there. BUT if you know where to shop, I guarantee you can get better deals here than in NY. Not to mention you never see the major discount racks in dept stores like Macy's in NY that you do here. I know this...I've lived it my whole life! But of course I always say I'm the "worlds bestest shopper" so I know where to find the deals. For ex, I saw a handbag I adored when in NY but it was over $200 so I sadly skipped it. I found a close to identical one by the same manufacturer (slightly different leather color), marked down in Filene's Basement for about $10!! You do NOT find things like that in NYC ever!!! And no matter what range you are looking for (high, moderate, low) there are lower prices in MA the vast majority of the time!!! |

No, that's what New Hampshire is for. :) |

Probably not. Sales tax is higher in NY plus the transportation cost |

I lived in the Boston area for most of my life and never went to NY to shop. I always went to New Hampshire when I was going to buy a lot of things, but it was almost never worth the gas spent just to save a few bucks on the taxes.
There is no tax on food or clothes in Boston and the sales tax is only 5%. |

You would have to save a lot of money on a lot of 'stuff' to make up for the cost of getting from Boston to New York and for staying overnight in New York (otherwise you wouldn't have time to shop) plus odds and ends like meals, parking etc.
You'll probably come out ahead on the money and definitely be less frazzled if you shop at home. |

I would not drive 4 hrs to save money, but whatever makes you happy. Is NY really cheaper than Boston? I am not so sure it is |

There are people who do that but not for that reason.
A lot of people do their Christmas shopping in New York because they like the variety of high end things available there. Price is not an object to them. They get all of their gifts and then have a great restaurant meal, see a show, and fly home.
If you want great prices in the Boston metro area try off-price places like "Building 19 Sales." They have a dozen stores featuring closeouts and insurance buyouts, all under the motto "Good Stuff Cheap." |

Well,I guess it depends on how much you are planning to buy...if you buy so much stuff that you would end up saving money even with the added expense of gas etc, then why not? |

yes. but i love boston stuff, if its good quality even if its expensive, i get it. |

Yes I do. All the time.
Once every season, I go to NY to shop. Just take the bus in the morning and I'm back at night the same day.
FineWhin... is 100% wrong. I find buying clothes in NY a lot more cheaper than Boston. That's because NY has more high street shopping stores than Boston. Most Boston stores are labels or recognized brand/designer names.
Another reason why shopping in NY is cheap is because there are a lot of wholesale shops in NY. When you buy more than 6 or more, you get wholesale prices. There are no wholesale clothing stores in Boston.
Fine Wh...there is not tax on clothes in Massachusetts either.
Anybody that thinks buying clothes in Boston is cheaper than buying clothes in NY does not how to shop in NYC. |

Well sure if it made sense to. I mean, going to New York for the day is very easy and can be fun as well. If you're going to see some sites, or eat some good food or have fun with friends, why not. And if at the same time, you find some good deals, and things you might not get in Boston, sure. NYC has more choices very often. But, if you know you're only going for one thing, or just a few items, and you might only save a few dollars, it wouldn't make sense to put out the money it will cost you to get there (either gas or bus fare). But usually if you make a day out of it, and take advantage of what NYC has to offer (different stores, whole sale shops, bigger sales, etc) then it's good and fun too! - |

I guess that depends on how much you'd be saving, as opposed to what you'd have to spend to get to NY. |
