Richard, I have 2 ideas for you 1. see if you can get a job at an Irish Pub, your accent and knowledge of Ireland would be cool there and come in handy and be an asset or 2. since all you guys are soccer nuts (football to you) see if you can get some job with the L.A. Galaxy soccer team doing something, then maybe your soccer knowledge would come in handy...I think these are really good ideas, GOOD LUCK.... |

Depends on where you move in America, if you move to a tourist area, then it is very easy to get jobs in the service industry. Otherwise jobs such as janitors, fast food resturaunts are pretty easy to get. Good luck. I hope you like America. |

If you are looking to get a job in the food industry, it's fairly easy, yes. You just have to be somewhat coordinated and clean, and have a high-school level of intelligence. The hardest part about finding a job is just putting the effort in. This is the case in any profession. You have to apply, and follow-up on your application with a phone call, to see if anyone has had time to review it. I can't stress to you enough how important it is to follow up on your application. If you have a resume (they are not hard to make), you should customize a copy of it for each job your are applying for, stressing your skills that pertain to whichever job you are applying for! Good look! |

The job market now is weak and most service jobs pay minimum wage which is not enough to live on. If you can get a job as a waiter, the tips will make the difference in earning enough money to live on. But, top waiter jobs are difficult to get because of the money that you can earn on a good night. You may need a certification as a bar man depending upon local laws. There are plenty of jobs for people who wish to work in retirement homes that pay slightly better but, you will have to change adult diapers. This job also requires a certification (one-class). I prefer the restaurant job because you can get free food which can save you money. If you are moving to a big city such as Los Angeles, you may find many jobs available because of the number of people living in Southern California. The cost of housing is expensive and you may have to share an apartment or house with several people to make the monthly rent. Try to get your housing in advance before moving and possible leads on jobs too. Good luck. |

...Go to a college. You missing out lots of stuff (not just the opportunities that a diploma or a degree can get). You want to be a bartender, a waiter, or a factory worker for the rest of your life? |

I want to trade places with you! I LOVE Ireland!
Employment in the food service industry is always good, and a good place to move up in authority. To impress the boss, you might want to take a class or two in culinary arts.
You'll start at the bottom- scrubbing those pots and pans- but that won't las long. The pay, however, isn't terrific. It's best to be a bartender or waiter because you get tips. A friendly manner and a genuine care for your clients will get you far. And they'll LOVE that accent!
Good luck, hope your plans work out. |

Finding a job you want was not a big issue , it will really depends on what state you're located. 1st thing you must worry about is to know what type of Visa you're on. It really depends, not all legal aliens are allowed to work in the US. |

Hi ... do you have a greencard that would allow you to live in the US? If you try and live illegally, it would be harder to get a job because you would need a job that pays cash only. If you are caught as an "alien" you will be deported and that will cost you a bit of your saved money. If you try for greencard later on and they find out you've been working, that could also cause trouble. Please do some research so you know what it takes to move and live in the US first, before you try it.
If it is the right time for you, trust your heart but from what I have read recently, it takes a lot to live in a foreign country. |

Since you posted your question in the Los Angeles section I assume this is where you plan to come.
The Los Angeles area is the second most expensive area in the U.S. to live. The pay you receive as a waiter or bartender would not be nearly enough to live on. Also consider that many of the "unskilled" jobs in California are taken by the multitude of "illegals" that flood across the border, so competition for them is high. |

No, all the wannabee actors are waiters and bartenders. You'll only make minimum wage ($8 per hour), and the apartments out there are $1200 per month. The numbers just done add up for non-skilled people. |
