Yes crime can be bad in Philly, but it depends on where you live. As long as you dont move to north philly, west philly or southwest philly you will be ok. There are many nice neighborhoods like Center city, olde city, Manyunk, Northeast is ok. & the Philadelphia suburbs are very nice if you dont mind to be a little outside the city. Check out properties or rentals at craigslist or

not necessarily. If you're moving into one of the rougher 'hoods, then yes, I'd call it out of control. Outside of those areas (parts of North Philly, Southwest Philly) you're generally going to be out of the way of violent, senseless acts. However, this being a city and all, there is always a possibility...obvioulsy.
Check out this blog and see what you find. It's broken down by neighborhoods, but usually, at the top of each there's a 'crime and security' issues thread.

If you decide on an area, you'll also be able to gain a ton of knowledge by talking to the residents directly within the site. |

Philly currently has the highest murder rate of any city stay away from North Philly - and its sub areas Logan, Germantown, NiceTown and west Philly and Southwest if you cant afford the Center city(Who Can) try The greater Northeast the farther out the better or the suburbs. try south jersey |

There is a current crime wave going on in Philly, but I like the town. I don't think you would be much surprised by the amount of crime in Philly as compared to Philly. What will shock you is the type of housing that you will run into. Philly is mostly row houses with small back yards...unlike Dallas. You just need to keep an open mind about things. It is a neat town...mix of NYC sophistication in a smaller package is all. |

Crime in Philly is about the same as it has been. Dallas is obviously less crime but Philly's nothing like Baltimore or NYC. |

DO NOT, repeat do NOT move into the City of Philadelphia. The Philly metro region is great but the city itself is a dirty, crime infested sess pool. They have a city wage tax and currently lead the nation in murders!
Try Bucks, Delaware, or Chester Counties. All close enough to the city to enjoy the arts and sporting events but far enough away to avoid the crime, corruption, and filth in Philly. Just steer clear of Norristown, Coatesville, Chester, and Bristol and it's all good. |

The murder rates are very high but most of the happen in the kensington section of Philadelphia. If you live in a good section of the city (ceter city, rittenhouse square, old city, chesnut hill) you will be fine. All cities have crime... Philly is a great city! |

It's like any large city when it comes to crime. Depends on where you want to live. There are many great neighborhoods in and around Philadelphia. If you are looking to buy, I can send you a list of properties to see what's out there. If I can be of assistance, send me an email. |

Hmmmm, let me put it this way. I need to renew my carry permit.....
Out of control? Somewhat in spots. Phila is a very big place. Bella Vista or Rittenhouse sqaure may be in Phila. ,but are light years different from 5th & Berks.
So your welcomed to come. Just lock your car, stay off the top 10 drug corners http://www.philaweekly.com and keep eye out for terrorist Pizza guys. |

I have been living in the Philly area for 17+ years. Just moved into the city limits.
Crime is in certain areas of the city. Drugs and gang violence. I'm sure that you've got some of the same things in Dallas.
Just be very aware of where you are moving. Check and see if you are moving to one of the areas that has a lot of crime reported. www.philly.com is the local newspaper website, or look at 6abc.com or nbc10.com |

You realize that Philadelphia is a big city, right???? Of course there is crime!! But, we are not the worst by any means. Always be aware, don't do silly things like keeping nice things in your car and then expect they don't get stolen, don't walk around at 1am by yourself. All of this is common sense. Also, research before you move - there are definitely nicer areas than others. It's more of a liberal place than your Dallas area, that's for sure. I personally think that is a big plus. |

Dallas has again earned the distinction of ranking #1 in total crime per capita among major cities with population over one million for the NINTH YEAR IN A ROW.
Yes, Philadelphia continues to have one of the worst crime rates. But ,several cities are still ahead of the city. The city continues to search for a solution but,the challange is multi-faceted.
There are many reasons for the crime problems in Philadelphia. More police are needed. Gangs have become a bigger and bigger problem. A great city ,Philadelphia needs to get this problem under control. Many of the city residents long for the days of Mayor Rizzo, who bordered on breaking the boundaries of individual civil rights, but, kept crime under control in the city of brotherly love.
Stay away from west Philly and you should be able to cope. |
