In the UK its a bonnet, in the USA a hood is also a gangster, perhaps if they were called a bonnet the job wouldnt have as much appeal?

A car bonnet is an automobile hood.
A hood ( as in neighbourhood) is an estate in the UK. Or in cockney talk it is a "manor".
