you can get dressed up or not...any attire pretty much goes. i know of one restaurant if you dress up you sit downstairs, if you are casual you go upstairs...
definitely go to the baratarian swamps where you can walk on the boardwalk thru the swamps for a few miles & see the wildlife/alligators, etc. this is where the pirates hung out. it's easy to hang in the french quarter but some of the best restaurants are outside FQ like tee eva's gumbo shop. there are many places & i recommend catching a taxi & asking the taxi driver to recommend a good place & take you there. of course, acme oyster house is a must everytime!! go to paul prudonne's for lunch & get the fried soft shell crab. they have dinner, too, but charge more for pretty much the same menu. go to napolean house & sit in the corner drinking on a hot day for hours. that may seem like a time waster to read it, but you'll see why once you get there. the new orleans art museum has great exhibits so check the schedule. cafe degas is out that way & is very nice...go to rock&bowl...see what's playing at house of blues...wander thru the architecture of FQ and the garden district...go antique hunting on royal & magazine streets. royal is more upscale...go dancing in every dive you find.....too much to mention -- you will have a great time!!! |

For casual places to eat, there are plenty of good places in the French Quarter--Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., on Decatur St., Crescent City Brewhouse, also on Decatur St., Acme Oyster House on Iberville, or any of the restaurants and cafes along Decatur and Jackson Square. There is no problem finding good places to eat in New Orleans; we are known for our food! For activities, I would recommend taking the Katrina tour of the Lower 9th Ward and other areas given by Grayline Tours; ride the St. Charles Streetcar, take a ride across the river on the Canal St. ferry (FREE if you are on foot), and when you get to the other side, get off and head for the free shuttle to Mardi Gras World, and take the tour to see where the floats are made for Carnival. Admission is charged; it's open every day--mardigrasworld.com. Take a riverboat cruise, a cemetery tour, visit museums like the World War 2 Museum on Magazine Street; there is a children's museum downtown near the convention center; visit the Zoo and Aquarium of the Americas. And don't forget Cafe du Monde at Jackson Square for cafe au lait and beignets. You might want to visit the Flea Market area, about six blocks past Jackson Square--plenty of shops and places to visit in the French Market area there--it's all part of the French Quarter. Go to the Wyndham Hotel at the foot of Iberville to the 11th floor lobby and you get a great view of New Orleans for free. There is also the Wax Museum in the Quarter on Conti St. getwaxed.com Have fun! |

Commander Palace is a great place to eat, and its very casual. I would also suggest you go to the aquarium, if its still open, it was very fun. And make sure you go to Bourbon street after 10pm, its a blast. The drive by liquor places are very fun too! Other than that, the sights are very nice, and you can make a whole day out of it!
Good Luck |

Central Grocery (on Decatur along the river). Don't let the name fool you, they have sit-down tables inside, and serve the best muffuletta sandwich.
Cafe Du Monde (also on Decatur). Cafe au lait and beignets (french donuts)
Spitale's Deli. Near Causeway Blvd in Metairie. Some of the best shrimp po-boys. Mostly a 'lunch-bunch' hole-in-the wall. |

The best thing to do in Naw Orlons (that's the way they say it), is to take I-10 to Gulf shores or Pensacola and have fun there. You don't need a bullet proof vest then. |
