It used to be the highest security prison in the United States Penal system. There are no confirmed escapes from that prison that made it out alive due to the fact that it is on an island in teh San Francisco Bay...where it is surrounded by frigid cold water with treacherous currents that no human could overcome. There is urban legend about a prisoner who escaped and made it out alive but that is just what it is...an Urban legend...For now it has been re furbished and is a tourist attraction for teh city of San Francisco-State of California....One of the more famous inmates of yore was..the birdman of Alcatraz... |

Well, it's nothing now. But, it used to be a place for the most vicious criminals in history. Now, it's a place people can go and visit, and let me tell you, it's pretty creepy! |

It is out of use right now. It used to be a very very high security prison that was nearly impossible to escape because of the fifty degree water and waves in the bay. The only way off was by boat! Now it's just a tourist attraction out in San Fransisco Bay and sort of a museum. |

alcatraz was a high security prison and supposed to be impossible to break out of. it was on an island just off of america, san francisco bay. it was first a light house then became a military prison then a government prison. about 36 prisoners tried to escape and failed most being shot down then 3 men tried on the 11th of june 1962 and managed to escape but nobody knows to this day if they made it to shore after this it was shut down and left as a ruin later being opened as a tourist attraction. |

My ex husband actually use to be in the coast guard and took care of the light house there in the late 1960's. They later automated this light house. It was before this time, the most secure prison of it's time. Only a few people may have survived, but there survival is doubtful and they were never found. Besides the very cold water, Sharks are frequent visitors there. If you want to see a great movie about it, watch the bird-man of Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood in it. It never was an asylum, never. In the 1970's a bunch of Indians tried to take it over and they lived their for a while trashing it pretty bad. Now you can take tour to the island out of the city. They run these tours daily. |
