Is Arizona really that HOT? I would like to move there, but wonder if it's too extreme, please read my detail |
I live in CA. I love the western part of the U.S, I love the canyons, mountains, ofcourse coastline. (I know AZ has no coastline) but I have to get out of expensive CA, I was looking at some apts and home properties in AZ, it is absolutely Gorgeous! I love the type of architecture there. And I definitely love the lower cost of living. I am just scared to death of those high temps though. I hear a lot of seniors live there, how in the world can they deal with it? What do locals do when it is 110+? Is the heat a danger to children at school? Will a place like AZ be a fireball with global warming? Please give me your opinion, I can't afford to live in CA anymore. Thanks |

It get's really hot. I used to live there. The seniors are called snow birds cause they only come in the winter time and go back east or midwest, where ever when the summer time comes. I moved to New Mexico. Summer time usually around 95. Winter has snow but doesn't stay around long except in the mountains. I'm from Cali too. I miss the beach tho. The heat in AZ can be dangerous. I hated it. It's exhausting. My brothers and their families still live there. I think they are nuts. But they do have good jobs there working for copper mines. The architecture in NM is very southwestern. It's where it originated. |

Arizona is a great place to live. For 3 months or so the temperature is pretty nasty. Most people go with indoor activities or escape to less oppresive heat up north (about a 2 hour drive). The heat is dangerous if you do not stay hydrated or if you leave living things in cars. Growing up here, we would play in the morning, then do chores during the hot part of the day. But again...that is only about 3 - 4 months of the year.
Now, the other nine months are absolutely beautiful. |

AZ is hott but you get used to it. The summer heat doesn't last that long and there are many things to do when it's hott. Go to the mall, library, movies, swimming, or anything else inside. When it is that hott you just stay inside. If the cost of living is cheaper maybe you could buy a summer house or travel to California a lot. Ps. if you live in mesa you can drive 90 min. up to cool pine trees and weather. |

Now don't exaggerate people! it's not that hot! I live here and i love it! You get used to it in no time! besides it's really safe here: no hurricanes, tornadoes! I've lived here for four years and there weren't any earthquakes at all! Plus there is air conditioning everywhere! It's really a great place to live. Monsoon season is great too! And you can swim all year around 'cause it's perfect weather! Hope i see you around! |

okay i have lived in arizona all my life and im 16. it is hot and in the summer it can get up to 115-120. yeah thats hott; but its not horrible! the first few years that you live here; youll probably hate it. but after a while you get used to it!! i doesnt really even bother me! and its only REALLY hot for like 3 months! but the rest of the 9 months, the weather is wonderful! and it even gets sometimes pretty cold in the winter! i think it has even dropped down to like 20 degrees and it has even snowed a few times too, and yes in the valley!!
the culture and people here is alot like california except the fact that there is no ocean :( so everyone just goes to california in the summer for vacation!!
its not that bad of a place to live. sometimes it can be a little boring. but life isnt as high paced here as it is in california so thats a plus!!
ohh and everyone like wears flip flops here year round. its pretty funny!! |

Well AZ can get up to 120 out side. That would be a dramatic change for you. I mean you would just have to deal with the dry heat and a high electricity bill. You don't have to worry about your children with school Cuz the teacher dont let them outside to play when it is to hot. It really depends on were you move to cuz some places can be as expensive as Cali. I live in Scottsdale and i am paying 1500 for a two bedroom apartment. I think you should take the chance. A change could be good for you guys and if your kids are still young now would be a good time. |

Have you thought about Prescott? I know a lot of people that would shoot me for this since Prescott is full of people from Calif, but it's 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix in the summer, and we have canyons and mountains. Flagstaff and Phoenix are only 90 minutes away, so if you want to get cooler or warmer it's just a short drive. We have a lot of wild west history and architecture here. And the crime is lower than Phoenix. |

well here today its only going to be 105,, in june it was 125, so it goes up and down,, 100 is a really nice day outside, in school the kids are required to have water bottles, come to lake havasu where i live, we have a nice lake, waterpark, the new mall is going in now, laughlin is only 1 hour and vegas is about 2 1/2 hours,, 2 if my wife drives,, getting on the river is really nice and the water temp is refreshing,, go online and check it out, a 2 bdroom duplex here is about 600 a month, and with the new mall,, lots of jobs,, oh by the way, winter it can get into the 30s |

Northern Az, Flagstaff, is far more bearable, even though it is hot, it snows in the winter. Phoenix is hot and dry like Las Vegas. Stay away from Yuma, near the Colorado, hot as Phoenix, more humid than Miami. |

I've lived in Arizona all my live (34 years!) and I love it. Everywhere you go has air conditioning. I'm a teacher and when it gets too hot, we don't go outside. During PE and lunch we stay in the multipurpose room. Usually if you live on the outskirts of Phoenix, it is a little bit cooler (not a lot, but a little!). The best part is during the winter when it is 70 degrees outside and the rest of the country is under 6 feet of snow!! :) |

I have lived in AZ for 18 years. Yes it is hot but only for three months or so a year. If it is to hot outside the kids play inside for recess instead of going outside to play. The seniors are all retired so they just stay inside all day. By the time we really have to worry about global warming we will all be dead. |

A lot of older people live in Arizona because you can breathe much better. It is very hot, but it is a dry heat. |

I just moved to Tucson, AZ. And I love it. The mountains are gorgeous. And the heat really isn't that bad (and I really think I'll love it in the winter). I just moved here from the midwest. And while the temps are hotter here, the humidity is so much less that it doesn't feel as hot.
Additionally, I work at a school hear. And it's fully equipped with effecient, effective air conditioning.
There are great apartments for affordable prices (even more affordable than where I came from in the midwest). |

Ex-Californian here! I've been in Phoenix 15 years now, so you can say I got used to the heat. It's hot but that's why they invented A/C. You have to have A/C in your car to make it through the summer. You still see people driving around without A/C, crazy people with convertibles and their tops down, and a lot of people still drive their motorcycles even in the middle of July and August.
I would suggest visiting in the middle of summer a couple of times before making your decision. But I think it feels worst when you are just visiting, and you know you have a place to go back to where it's cool, I guess it's a mind thing. Believe me, home will always be home, but it's too expensive for me to move back. You can always catch cheap flights back when you need a break.
Prescott, AZ kind of reminds me of a California town and it's not that hot there either, You might want to look into that., but there isn't many jobs there. |

I remember when it got up to 122. That was so hot, the planes couldn't take off at the airport. Apparently, the instruction manuals to operate the 737's did not include flap settings for ambient temperatures that high. |

I was going to move there but I hated it. I went there one summer and I wanted to die. It was way to hot for me. The cost of living, like you said was nice but not worth it. I live in Colorado now and I love it! Its a tiny bit more than AZ but not as much as CA and way worth it! |

i also live in california
i tried to live there but it was unbearable
hot from beginning of april to end october
miserable i gave it 2 years and decided id put up with the higher cost of living especially for my kids
too many i mean way too many colored people
you think its bad here in la wait til you see phoenix
and believe me when you go thru the nice neighborhoods you can actually pick out the houses where the coloreds live
because they are the ones that have messy yards broken down vehicles and trash everywhere
again...i believe they are trashy people anyways
go back to katrina where you belong
so think about it before you move
california is alot better and nicer |
