I love it. Born and raised - but Flowery Branch is forever away! Stick to inside the perimeter ... or at least within a stone's throw from it. Brookhaven, Garden Hills, Peachtree Hills, Little Five Points, Decatur, Candler Park, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, there's a list of neighborhoods on the wiki.

If you have allergies - would not be the place for you.

I STRONGLY recommend visiting a couple times and get used to the south. Southerners think differently and lots of northerners experience "culture shock" when they come without visiting.

Some counties have better neighborhoods than others....
Fulton county - good (more expensive tho, Atlanta & its sub-neighborhoods)
Cobb - good (suburb living)
Dekalb - ok (some good, some bad, shop around & ask neighbors)
Gwinnett - ok (some good, some bad, mexican gangs in areas)
Clayton - avoid
Fayette - avoid

I was born in 1970 in Tucker, Ga. I have lived in the suburbs of Atlanta my whole life. You can not find a better place to live. You do not want to be downtown. You do want to be north of I20. Unless you a pretension snob you do not need to be all that close to the perimeter. I would not live inside or at the perimeter for anything. Besides prices for homes are ridiculous the closer you get to the city.

Well it depends how much money you have and how much you can afford a house. I will recomend you to stay away from clayton county. The suburbs here are pretty ok and affordable. Gwinnet and Fulton county is ok to live at. Buckhead which is in fulton is the richest area here with mansions.

There is lots to do in Atlanta, on the downside though traffic is horrible, we have a smog problem, we have some financial problems in the city. Stay away from Clayton & Fayette County schools because one lost accreditation and the other has severely cut their teachers salaries & benefits. Also, I would not move here unless you already have a job here, our unemployment rate is currenly higher than the national average. I believe it is about 8.6%. Our crime is getting worse in the city also.

Good places near Atlanta to live - Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Marietta, Roswell, Woodstock, Kennesaw, Peachtree City, Newnan.

Bad places near Atlanta - Hapeville, College Park, East Point, and pockets all around the city.

All Hail Brak!
Live in the suburbs of Atlanta and you'll be fine.
Atlanta is pretty much the Baltimore of the South.
Lots of traffic, crime, & pollution.
If you live in the suburbs, it's much nicer though.
Lots of friendly people too.

Try to live in a suburb that's within about 30-45 minutes of downtown ATL. Property south of Atlanta is MUCH cheaper than north. I would suggest Henry County. You'll get a whole lot more for your money. Check out www.realtor.com. And, there is little crime. If you like, you can find crime statistics right online for the different counties.
There is plenty to do in ATL, no matter your interests.

Not the city of course. I have lived in Georgia my whole life and Lawrenceville, GA for the last 15 years. Several nice cities are Kennesaw, Lawrenceville, and Suwanee. No offense to those that live there but I would avoid the south and south west side of Atlanta. North and North East is preferred. It is pretty humid in Georgia but we basically have mild winters with generally one snow day.Our summers are hot but not extreme. We have days of rain but our lake levels indicate we are still in drought conditions. Georgia is great in that we have lakes, mountains and a short days drive to the ocean or to Florida.

I do not know why I am getting thumbs downs. I have lived here all my life and if you don't believe me, ask a real estate agent. Yes, you can live in the city, there is plenty of night life, and crime to go with it. Yes, we have MARTA, our rapid trasit busses and train. It is too safe if you are alone. May be great for a football or baseball day out to Atlanta or a trip to the airport. But I have been panhandled and harrased on the bus and train. I worked as a paramedic in Atlanta from 1991 - 1994 and I am quite aware of the crime, shooting, stabbings, rapes...as well as plenty of gang activity..check out the crime statistics. Yes, if you live in the inner city you will have all the benefits of living in the city. Probably close to work and play. I also disagree with some of the other steriotypes that have put advise above. We have grits at Waffle house but a lot of Georgiaians hate grits. We like sweet tea, just like anyone else...but the World of Coke is in Atlanta so we unfortunately drink a lot of soda. We just don't call it "pop." There is some "southern hospitality" but I Good luck in your search. Consult with Diamond Dwellings Real Estate and ask for Mr Omeara if you are looking for a good agent. He helped me.

I've only been to the airport and it was yucky probably all of the foot traffic though. The people are extremely nice and friendly.

DeKalb county = bad
Henry county = bad
Clayton county = bad
Gwinnett county = good

Well, overall.

Trust me, you don't want to be right inside of Atlanta.

Stay away for south Atlanta the north is the nicest place to be like Gwenneth

Red Flag
Probably better than Baltimore. Flowery Branch is perfect to live.

I've been through there some of the changed you will notice are:

-its way hotter than the northeast.
-they don't use snow plows.
-state income taxes will probably be lower.
-everyone drinks sweet tea.
-its kinda a forested state.
-there's a lot of people in the state.
-I'm guessing some neighborhoods are poverty stricken cause of the warmer temperatures could allow people to live more of a homeless lifestyle. Instead of going to a shelter for a warm place at night to sleep.
-Lots of people! Atlanta is a big hub for people and traffic. Its not a small town.
-they like grits too!
-and you should like it living down there, mostly nice people like anywhere else you go.

Look at Peachtree City (postal code 30269). It's a planned community and people use battery powered Golf Carts (on over 100 miles of paved paths) rather than cars which places to shop and dine. There is a good school system and its only about 15-20 minutes to and from Atlanta. The traffic isn't too bad except for around rush hour. I moved from there and miss it very much.

Atlanta (pronounced /ətˈlæntə/ or /ætˈlæntə/) is the capital and most populous city in State of Georgia, as well as the 33rd largest city in the United States of America with a population of 519,145.[3] It is the county seat of Fulton County although a small portion extends into
A map showing roads and Indian trails circa 1815, with late 19th century Fulton County and City of Atlanta outlines overlaid.Main
The land comprising the city of Atlanta was once an Native American village called Standing Peachtree. The land that became the Atlanta area was sold by the Cherokee and Creeks to white settlers in 1822, with the first area settlement being Decatur. Soon, an informal trading post sprang up as the first white settlement, called Thrashersville.
On December 21, 1836, the Georgia General Assembly voted to build the Western and Atlantic Railroad to provide a trade route to the Midwestern United States.[20] Following the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation between 1838 and 1839 the newly depopulated area was opened for the construction of a railroad. The area around the eastern terminus to the line began to develop first, and so the settlement was named "Terminus" in 1837. By 1842, the settlement had six buildings and 30 residents and the town was renamed "Marthasville".[21] However, some felt the name to be too quaint. The Chief Engineer of the Georgia Railroad, J. Edgar Thomson, suggested that the area be renamed "Atlantica-Pacifica", which was quickly shortened to "Atlanta".[21] The residents approved, and the town was incorporated as Atlanta on December 29, 1847.[22] By 1854, another railroad connected Atlanta to LaGrange, and the town grew to 9,554 by 1860.
A slave auction house on Whitehall StreetDuring the American Civil War, Atlanta served as an important railroad and military supply hub. In 1864, the city became the target of a major Union invasion. The area now covered by Atlanta was the scene of several battles, including the Battle of Peachtree Creek, the Battle of Atlanta, and the Battle of Ezra Church. On September 1, 1864, Confederate General John Bell Hood evacuated Atlanta after a four-month siege mounted by Union General William T. Sherman and ordered all public buildings and possible Confederate assets destroyed. The next day, Mayor James Calhoun surrendered the city, and on September 7 Sherman ordered the civilian population to evacuate. He then ordered Atlanta burned to the ground on November 11 in preparation for his march south, though he spared the city's churches and hospitals.[
The rebuilding of the city was gradual. From 1867 until 1888, U.S. Army soldiers occupied McPherson Barracks in southwest Atlanta to ensure Reconstruction era reforms. To help the newly freed slaves, the Freedmen's Bureau worked in tandem with a number of freedmen's aid organizations, especially the American Missionary Association. In 1868, Atlanta became the fifth city to serve as the state capital.[26] Henry W. Grady, the editor of the Atlanta Constitution, promoted the city to investors as a city of the "New South", one built on a modern economy, less reliant on agriculture. However, as Atlanta grew, ethnic and racial tensions mounted. The Atlanta Race Riot of 1906 left at least 27 dead[27] and over 70 injured.
In 1907, Peachtree Street, the main street of Atlanta, was busy with streetcars and automobiles. On December 15, 1939, Atlanta hosted the premiere of Gone with the Wind, the movie based on Atlanta-born Margaret Mitchell's best-selling novel of the same name. Stars Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, and Olivia de Haviland attended the gala, which was held at Loew's Grand Theatre.[28]
During World War II, manufacturing such as the Bell Aircraft factory in the suburb of Marietta helped boost the city's population and economy. Shortly after the war, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was founded in Atlanta.[29]
In the wake of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education, which helped usher in the Civil Rights Movement, racial tensions in Atlanta began to express themselves in acts of violence. On October 12, 1958, a Reform Jewish temple on Peachtree Street was bombed; the synagogue's rabbi, Jacob Rothschild, was an outspoken advocate of integration.[30] A group of anti-Semitic white supremacists calling themselves the "Confederate Underground" claimed responsibility.
Atlanta's Inman Park neighborhood was the city's first planned suburb. Today, it features several mansions and many colorful restored bungalows. In the 1960s, Atlanta was a major organizing center of the Civil Rights Movement, with Dr. Martin Luther King and students from Atlanta's historically black colleges and universities playing major roles in the movement's leadership. Two of the most important civil rights organizations -- Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee -- had their national headquarters in Atlanta. Despite some racial protests during the Civi
