Is Denver a great place to live? |
I'm thinking of relocating and I was thinking of Denver? Is it a great place to live? Is it easy to find a job there? Do you have to have a car or is it like NY and you can get around by subway just fine? And what is the racial make up of the city? |

There's no subway in Denver. You'll probably need a car. Other than that, Denver is great. And don't let the "snowed in" people fool you. First off, it's fun when that happens. Secondly, the snow usually melts fast because the temperatures fluctuate so much here.
And since you asked -- There's a majority of hispanics in Denver. |

You got some very inaccurate and smart mouthed answers. Winters in Denver are generally mild. Occasional bad snows, but melts within a couple of days, unlike many places. some winters have more snow than others. There is a good public bus system. It is quite racially diverse. Many thngs to do. You may want to consider Ft. Collins, not as large, not far from Denver and voted the best city in the U.S. to live in under 300,000 population. or , also, Colorado Springs. Voted best city to live in with population over 300,000. It is one hr. south of Denver. Beautiful, close tomountains. has good bus system, but a car is nice. You can do a web search on Co. Springs and on Ft. Collins for more info. Co. Springs is very racially diverse. |

I have lived in Denver my entire life and I love it. It is a big city so you have all of the luxuries of that and its really close to the mountians so there are all kinds of outdoor activities you can do also. Finding a job isn't very hard, of course that depends on your qualifications and what you want to do. You really do need a car. There is public transportation (buses and light rail, no subway) but it takes a really long time to get to many places so having a car is really the only way I would go. As for the racial makeup of the city it is a pretty diverse town, which I love. But it really just depends what neighborhood you are in some areas are heavily populated with latinos while others are heavily populated with white people. But it brings a nice mix of people together. |

You need a car because everything is so spread out ya knwo? it's beautiful and fun, and certain "things" are legal if ya know what I mean. racial make up, from what I know probably the same as everywhere, white, black, latino, etc. I don't think it's big enough for a subway. Job you should be fine if you have training in a certain dept. just like anywhere else' |

I love love love living here. It's not really hard to get a job. Just depends what you want to do i guess. A car is a huge help unless you like to ride the bus. Good Luck! |

I don't live there, but passed through Denver on a trip to Aspen. It's not like NYC - Denver is spread out wide, and a car will make your life a lot easier.
Work in Denver, and hang out in Aspen. Aspen is gorgeous. |

The big question: compared to where? I lived there for a year. I would say it was necessary to have a car but they do have bus service. It is a good place to live. Lots of rentals. Pretty easy going. It is mostly all white. There is a sizeable Black population but no outstanding racial tensions. In fact I lived in northern Aurora, which was about one-third white, one-third black and one-third Hispanic--which is far more mixed than MetroDenver as a whole. There was crime but I didn't feel intimidated. If you are coming from a small town, Denver would be pretty exciting for a while. From a big city, you will still be able to get a bagel. It snows in Denver, especially in the Spring but the nice thing is it warms up above freezing every day so you aren't walking around on ice. In fact they've got a song about "the Sun melts the snow, making the Rivers flow, to the Sea"--a quick synopsis of Colorado geography. I thought the driving there was outrageous. Every Friday, accidents all over town. And no wonder they drive without caution or manners.
Probably the cutest aspect of life in Denver is the Prairie Dog. Even in the densest part of town, among tall buildings, whenever there is a vacant lot you will see scores of these vigilant little fellows up on their hinds alert for whatever. Possibly an embarrassment to the cities urban pretensions, the forces of real estate have defamed them as carriers of the plague. Still you will wonder how these cute little fellows have escaped domestication. And they are smart! Unlike beavers or other road-kill prone animals, the Pairie Dog can actually cross himself. On multilane highways, you will see these poor little buggers patiently waiting on the median for their chance to resume crossing.
If you would like to learn about the political scene in Denver there is the work of a Colorado University professor Phillip Goodstein: "Ghosts of Denver: Capitol Hill" and other works. As a Jewish guy growing up in Denver, Goodstein clung tenaciously to an alternative political philosophy while recording the basest political moves around him. From the tactics used against Hippies in the 60's to the notorious Gay Bus used by the police to entrap Gays in Cheesman Park, it is fun reading.
Even when I was there, DURA (Denver Urban Renewal Authority) was attempting to condemn a perfectly good mall occupied by many Asian businesses to make way for an additional Wal-Mart Super Center. In Denver, Wal-Mart is offered tax breaks. |

I have lived in Denver for six years after coming here from Northern California. I would say the Denver area is pretty similar to San Francisco except in not being next to the ocean. It has it's old neighborhoods like the Five Points with a lot of historical significance and it has it's newer neighborhoods, like Denver Tech Center, Greenwood Village, and Highlands Ranch. Most of the upscale newer areas are in south Denver. They have an excellent public transportation system combining buses and light rail. The freeways have just been expanded and renovated with the T-Rex project. Traffic is intense during rush hours just like any other big city. However, weekends are nice to get around with a car. I would suggest having a car if at all possible. The weather is nice except in the winter when it gets pretty damn cold sometimes. However, when it does snow it is usually gone in a couple of days. This last winter was the exception rather than the rule. Summers are warm in the day. But, it does cool off at night around 7 pm. Jobs are jobs depending on what you're looking for. It shouldn't be a problem. There are quite a few cultural activities around Denver, major sports venues, the Denver Fillmore and the Red Rocks Amphitheatre for rock and roll, good restuarants and bars, and lots of outdoor activities. Quality universities in the area plus lots of tech schools available. Rents are starting to climb because of the mortgage foreclosure deal. But, they are still reasonable compared to other big cities. Food, utilities, gas are about the same again. It is a racially diverse city. However, there are ethnic neighborhoods just like anywhere. There are significant Hispanic and African-American communities. But, I couldn't tell you percentages. Asian community is there but, not as big. Most people in Denver are white. Hope this helps. |

Well, the downtown area is a bit cramped, so I wouldn't suggest living there. I'd move to Boulder (near Denver) if I were you. It is SO much easier to get a job, and everything is close by. Most people take the bus in Boulder, so there isn't really many cars on the road. |
