Depends on how you handle yourself and where you go stay in the tourist areas and you'll be fine. Don't go to the drug areas. |

UGH! There is so much negativity in some of these answers!
Basically, yes, Detroit CAN be dangerous. No, a good portion of the area is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.
Just like any other large city, stay in well lit, populated area's if you're there at night. I highly doubt you are planning on going outside the downtown area, so don't worry.
As for Belle Isle, it is a GREAT island. Did you know that it's actually larger than Central Park? I do not recommend going there at night because it is not well lit. However, there is a police station and national guard station right on the island! I got married on Belle Isle last year at the Scott Fountain. And I'm not the only one whose gotten married there. Do you think it would be a popular place to get married if it were horrible & dangerous? It's a beautiful spot that's filled with people on the weekend. There is a yacht club and nature conservatory there as well as "The Casino" which apparently has a bunch of senior activities when there aren't parties & wedding receptions there.
I doubt your brother has been to Detroit and just doesn't know any better. I grew up in Detroit and currently live in Warren, which is on the northern border. My husband & I go downtown every chance we get. Go to RiverWalk, Greektown, Campus Martius, Belle Isle, the People Mover and anyplace else downtown. It's a lot of fun! |

Detroit is not as dangerous as many people that do not go there make it out to be. You should come to Detroit, if you stay in Windsor you will have had your fill of 19yr old Americans puking in the street. If you go into Detroit you will be staying in Tourist areas and will be very safe. You live in Toronto so you understand the ins and outs of a large city. Much like Toronto, Detroit has some bad areas. I hope to see you on Belle Isle or in Greektown to personally welcome you to our city. Have fun and see you soon |

Detroit has it's bad areas but the tourist areas are just as safe as Windsor. Stay off of Belle Isle at night - during the day it is a beautiful place with a lot to see and enjoy. Downtown has great restaurants, clubs, casinos, music.
I kind of had to giggle when I saw you were from Toronto. When my friends and I were there, we were warned several times by locals at our hotel not to go out alone at night. I didn't feel safe in some areas there either. All big cities are the same - good areas and bad areas. The unfamiliar always seems ominous to a degree. |

Downtown Detroit is not dangerous! I go downtown all the time. There is alot more going on then the suburbs. The dangerous part of Detroit are the neighborhoods. If your coming from Toledo you'll be coming straight up the expressway and will never enter them. If you come from Windsor, all you have to do is cross the bridge or tunnel and your downtown. I highly recommend coming over. Don't believe everything you hear. Check it out for yourself. |

A lot of detroit is dangerous. You have to know how to handle yourself. If you stay around downtown and the tourist areas you should be fine. Don't venture out in to the neighborhoods though. If you're not from there or know somebody who is, you are more than likely not going to be welcome.
Don't go to Brightmoor, Zone 8, Linwood-Dexter, Schoolcraft Road, 6 or 7 mile, Joy Road and you should be ok. |

Detroit is safe it is only dangerous when you start a fight or be rude. Belle Isle is safe because people jog there in the morning police patrol it all day. Who ever stereotype Detroit never been to Detroit. Leave Belle Isle or any Detroit park at night. you won't get raped or shot or anything bad if You don't do anything bad. People come from the suburbs to go to the State Fair (which is really close to a dangerous spot, and nothing happens. |

in everywhere you will find a place that dangerous but if you come in peace and mind your business they 're will treat you with respect. but if you come for trouble you will find it. don't worry about dangerous just don't stay too later at night and don't go out with people you don't know, and stay away from corner with no lights or place that have no people there. you will have fun just like anybody else . |

Like anywhere in the country, it depends on where you go. Downtown, for example, is full of businesses and tourist attractions. It is going to be as safe as Windor in most cases. I have been there many, many times and have never had a problem, or even seen someone have a problem. Now if you want to go spend some time on 8 Mile road or in the slums somewhere, then you'd best program the cops into your cell phone and hope "they" don't take your phone, too. :-P |

Avoid Belle Isle at night. Other than that, if you hit Greektown for dinner you will be fine. As with any big city, just avoid going off the beaten path if you are unfamiliar with the city. |

Don't go to Belle Isle at night and you can go downtown, but as for anywhere... don't go in dark alleys. It's not THAT dangerous downtown, but stay where there are other people and you will be fine. |

Although Detroit does have a high crime rate (and no, it's NOT just like any city in America, like some like to say), It's not any worse than Miami, D.C., or L.A. and plenty of tourists go to those cities. Like most cities with high crime rates, the crime is concentrated in the poor neighborhoods and not in the busy tourist areas or downtown. Just follow the same rules for Toronto... |

from where you can see in windsor it is great. When you travel outside that lit area people arent too helpful, I know because I moved from Ca. to the states... staying downtown or venturing to the suburbs are great.... Oh and Belle Isle at night... DONT DO IT.... great place for rapings and shootings... an old member of D12 was murdered there. |

My best friend just came home form Iraq and HE says it is much safer over in Iraq than in the city of Detroit.
My neighbors are going back to Iraq after their cousin was shot and killed for 10 dollars, and they lived here for over 20 years, what does that tell you,, ,, |
