I have been there a bunch of times and stayed there once for 3 weeks traight. In my opinion, its all hype. I wouldn't live there if you gave me a house there. I don't even look at it as a place to go vacation or sightsee.

depends which part of town you visit... L.A. is one of the largest cities. there's ghetto parts and nice parts.

L.A. is the hype machine (not only for itself, but for all of the United States as well), so no discussion of it can avoid an element of self-concious propaganda.

Thanks to L.A., the world thinks New York City is all about the mighty skyscrapers and auspicious wealth (we never quite make it out to the gritty suburban boroughs). Thanks to L.A., the world thinks San Francisco is sunny and the streets are sparkling clean (an amusing fiction to anyone who has actually been there). Thanks to L.A., the world thinks everyone in L.A. and Miami are either sexy, white, and half-naked *OR* gangbanging, ethnic, criminals.

Of course, most people in L.A. live fairly mundane ritualistic lives not dissimilar to the rest of the suburban United States (sleep, wake up, eat, go to work, eat, go home to watch TV afterwards, sleep). But what's the fun in that?

L.A. creates and fosters reality from media images. So to speak of L.A. hype as a negative attribute is to miss the point. We should not ignore the city's greatest gift - an uncanny ability to dream up idealized fantasies about itself and the rest of the nation. In that sense, I would say it is most certainly hyped, but that it is a good thing!

WONDERFUL......

L.A. is a good city, and it's not just for the hype of it! Well, adjacent to it is the legend Hollywood City, so that is why it is never devoid of tourists and adventure seekers. As an American City, L.A. is a bit typical and could surely give New York, Chicago or Florida or even Texas (we should give respect to our bush President Bush) a run for its money.

L.A. is great, good and somewhere in-between!

depends...L.A. is huge. there are some good parts but mostly bad. its overcrowded and more polluted than N.Y. its overrated. there are alot of violence between races and gangs. its a horrible place to live and plus the school system is one of the worst.

Just like those summer blockbuster movies that people are anxious to see, it's more hype than true... It's a city where majority of the people are either there for the image or just plain fakes. Don't let the weather fool you...While it is mostly warm and comfortable, the air quality is horrendous, the traffic is out of control and either extremes of the weather brings in some sort of calamity. For example, if it is too hot, watch out for the brush fires! Too cold or rainy, watch out for the floods and the mudslides. There also isn't a distinct separtion from the "bad" neighborhoods to the "good" ones for people who first visit there. East L.A. looks nice with the palm trees and the sun and so does South Central....

cleverlyinsane1
It's a lot of hype.. it is a s#@thole, unless you have money and is over crowded with a TON of traffic. Although, I love CA and lived in southern CA for a long time...I would not live in L.A. It's truly not all that!

Like all Cities it has its good and bad

The Good-The Beaches, The Nightlife and Clubs-The Strip and Hollywood, The Movie Stars and Movie/TV Business, Year Round GREAT Weather, beautiful people, a laid back lifestyle.

The Bad-poverty, TRAFFIC, pollution, crime, High Price of Housing and Living--then again those things bacially hold true for any major city!

as the song goes---I LOVE LA! Sunset Blvd WE LOVE IT, Sante Monica Blvd WE LOVE IT, Ventura Blvd, WE LOVE IT WE LOVE IT WE LOVE IT! LMAO

Perspective is everything. If you are from there, it probably is "all that". If you talk to the rest of the country, it's just another place, interesting, maybe, but not a big deal.

If you are considering visiting the US from another country, keep in mind it does not represent a true picture of the US.

I have a feeling the TRAFFIC wastes a GRIP of time. Driving on "The 5" to "The 101" to "The 10" takes forever. Its like, totally annoying, ya know?

THE SF BAY AREA IS WAY BETTER...and less traffic

-->I don't want to say that people in a city suck, because LA is the 2nd or 3rd largest metro area in the country, and theres tons of people of every type.

BUT, hollywood has so much of a handle on that town --and advertises so much, that the people I happen to know from SoCal are so image and media concious, it bores me to death.

TV sucks, doing stuff outside, playing board games, sports, etc, and hanging with friends, or making/listening to music is wayy better than wasting 2 hours watching some lame game shows/reality tv, or fake cop shows...

some parts are good, some parts are bad. But yes, it is the hype.
