I went there for business in May of 2006, and stayed for 3 months to help my company out (they were having trouble staffing)...

It was a great place to visit...but I wouldn't want to live there...

I met some of the nicest people, and there is a ton of history to the area...but it just wasn't home to me...and I'm not sure it ever could be...

of course, finding muffalettas in EVERY grocery store was an added bonus...

I really love it. Friendly people, lots to do, good food and good music. Whats not to like :)

Don't worry about the city/state thing. New Orleans is occasionally referred to by the rest of Louisiana as the "Free State of Orleans" because the City has a Home Rule Charter that sets it apart from the rest of the state.

"Best" is too subjective.

NOLA really is a special place in the world and I have no desire to live anywhere else (visiting elsewhere yes, living elsewhere no) but not everyone wants/likes the same things so Viva la difference!

Its a great place to live, of course it has crime, all big cities do, but that is not in all places, only certain places(like the westbank) get a lot of crime. Yeah you'll get the occasional bad thing in other places, but again, just like any other city. You'd be better off living in the suburbs, or uptown New Orleans. People are extremley friendly down here and not greedy bastards like most people are and seem to think. I hope you come visit one day. We have a rich culture, and are for the most part, very accepting people. And most of New Orleans is NOT below sea level.

Never heard of a state called New Orleans.

Louisiana is the state, New Orleans is a city in Orleans Parish. Life here is the same as it is everywhere else in the U.S.

PyroDice
Katrina racked the city up pretty good. It's still below sea level and it's still vulnerable to future bad weather.

anythingwilldo
Louisiana can get a bit wet.
