Is New Orleans worthy of a holiday destination in September?

I'm from Australia and will be having a holiday in August / Sept and plan on visiting New York, Orlando, Miami and Memphis.

Is it worthwhile spending a few days in New Orleans in mid Sepetember?

I've heard that there is not much to see there as it was destroyed by the hurricanes.

Absolutely! It can be hot in September, but the French Quarter is up and running, as are most of the restaurants and almost all of the hotels. Some areas are still struggling, but they are also not typically tourist areas. The ferries are running, one of the two streetcar lines is running (and free right now), the zoo and aquarium are open (as of tomorrow). There is lots to see downtown, garden district, uptown, mid city, etc.

I am not a fan of the disaster tourism, but I cannot deny that seeing the destruction of parts of the city can create a very emotional response. Only tour the destruction if you can handle it.

We hope to see you in September!

There is plenty to see here, we are rebuilding! Just make sure you watch the weather forecasts; September is in the middle of hurricane season and if there is a storm out there in the Gulf of Mexico, this is not the place to be.

New Orleans has really come back. It is worth spending at least a couple of days there. It'd also be a great way to show your support for the victims by spending some of your vacation money there. The tourism industry took a big hit when many conventions decided things were too uncertain to be held in Nawlins, and moved to other venues, so they could really benefit from you staying there a couple of nights. There's a lot that's been cleaned up and reopened for business now. You'll have a great time.

Memphis? Are you a blues fan or an Elvis fan? New Orleans will be an interesting place to see once it's back on its feet; however, it is still too early.

New Orleans and Southern Louisiana (the "bayou") are beautiful places to visit, and September is a great time to go there.

I have vacationed in New Orleans twice, once in September, and once in July and it was definitely more tolerable (weather-wise) in late September.

The French Quarter is beautiful, with it's one-of-a-kind architecture, history, attitude and unbelievably good food and drink. We enjoyed late night drinks and rollicking piano music (they take requests!) at Lafitte's Blacksmith Shoppe (a bar, formerly the headquarters of the 18th century pirate, Jean Lafitte) and we stayed at a great family owned Bed & Breakfast in the Garden District, The Josephine Guest House.

I'd go back to New Orleans/Southern Louisiana in a heartbeat, even post-hurricane. There is no other place like it on earth. :)

Have a great vacation!

YES! I live there and it is AWESOME! In september it would be hot, but it would be a good time. The best time, though, would be during Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest.
Hope you come!

Definitely! The French Quarter is pretty much back to normal. I have visited there 3 time (about a month total) since Katrina. I always go in October and it is usually fairly warm then, so I would imagine that September would be pretty hot. Go-have fun!

i went right after the hurricane and had a great time. so yes, definately worth the trip

We'd love to have you! The later the better, just because it's cooler. There's still stuff to do, and you can do day trips into the plantation areas. Just want you to know, we appreciate that you're thinking about it with an open mind!

From what I understand, the tourist destinations in New Orleans are back to normal. The majority of the devastation is in the outlying, poorer areas that I doubt you will be visiting as a tourist. Also, you can feel good about yourself for supporting their businesses, which have no doubt taken a hit since Katrina.
