It depends on what criteria you use to evaluate where you live.
You are certainly going to get a lot less house/condo/apartment for your dollar than you would almost anywhere else in the country. If you don't mind paying a lot more for a lot less then fine.
You are going be competing with a lot more people for the same things: jobs, apartments, tickets, reservations, green space, etc. but then in some of these areas, there is more to share, too.
If you can't get tickets to the show you want, there are dozens of others. If you can't get a diner reservation at the your first choice, there are thousands of other places to eat.
Depending on where you live, you are going to see a lot fewer trees and a lot less grass.
I love NYC. I visit there all the time. There is a ton of stuff to do that you can't find anywhere else in such a compact area. But, when I think about it, for me, living there would be just too much of a hassle.
If I were you, I would make a list of all the things that you love, like, dislike, and hate about the place you live now. Then compare it to what is available in NYC. Pay particular attention to the ones that are most important to you, then make up your mind. |

Well, it is pretty expensive, and the noise can be too much, but I would suggest the outskirts. |

sure if you are into entertaiment of new york (broadway, yankees, mets, MSG)and if you can afford it. |

It is true that it's expensive, but there are some quasi-bargains - e.g., Inwood in upper Manhattan, and, and as pointed out by others, places like Queens, which are a hop away from "the city."
I believe it's the best place to live in the U.S. for people who like people, intellectual stimulation, art, theater, nightlife, entertainment in general, and, what I most appreciate, freedom from the dictates of what Sinatra called "those little town blues." You can be you here - or you can be somebody else if you like! |

NO, I cannot think of any good reasons to move there. Its a terrible place; crowded, dirty and old. |

If you can afford to live there, it is the best US city by far. |

Ummm...New York definitely has its good points. You can get anything here and the transportation system takes you anywhere. It is expensive to live here though and hard to find an apartment that is good and has reasonable rent in the city. I guess from another persons POV New York would seem like a great place with tons of stuff to do. I think if you get a good place to stay and are financially secure then it is a good place. You would have to deal with the fact that New York is crowded and it hard to get around in a car sometimes but there are great experiences to be had here. |

I recommend queens,NY which is about 15miles away it isnt as crowded as manhatten but its very inexpense, mass public transportation and great community ( i live there) |

It kind of depends on your personality and look on life. If you like the hustle and bustle of big cities, NY is one of the best for that. Stores/bars/etc. are open late and you can party pretty much all the time. Think Sex and City, if you've watched that TV series, although that does glorify NY a bit.
The downside is that it's expensive pretty much for everything (food, living, and other normal expenses).
If you're more laid back and don't like the noise of the city but still want to enjoy some of the nice places once in a while, it is a bit cheaper to find a place near a train station/ferry/subway station and commute from Jersey/Queens/Brooklyn, but the commute can take an hour+, so it's a bit of a juggle. |

I agree with sithroya, Queens has some great ethnic neighborhoods, most parts are a quick subway ride to Manhattan (barring any extroadinary circumstances), is close to beaches, has more open space, and overall is much cheaper than Manhattan and some parts of Brooklyn. |
