YES, it is. That's what the numbers say, and I certainly agree.
You see, facts and movies/TV shows usually have ever-so-slight differences between them. Without that violence and conflict, where's the plot/story?
In visiting just about every one of our major cities spanning 49 of our 50 US States, I do have to agree that New York is our safest major city.
People are skeptical of these facts BEFORE visiting. After they go home, they're usually converted believers.
As for posters saying that Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and upper Manhattan neighborhoods such as Harlem are unsafe, this is not necessarily true. In fact, some of the SAFEST and BEST neighborhoods of the city are in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Harlem is turning around, though a few surrounding neighborhoods are admittedly still not the greatest.
That said, I'm not saying NYC is any kind of utopian happy-land or anything like that. We do certainly have our rough areas, and there are places I'd avoid even during the day. However, those places are few and far between.
Don't worry about "unprovoked attacks;" for example, New York City has just reached its lowest murder count since the mid-1960s, and of those, the vast majority of those were people who had previous histories with each other. Certainly not random. And yes, I do say murder "count," not murder "rate," which is remarkable considering that we have MANY more people here now than in the 1960s, and we still have fewer homicides today than we did back then.
Of course, use the same precautions that you'd use anywhere else. Don't do dumb things like having your wallet hanging out of your back pocket or anything like that. Just use common sense and you'll be just fine. You'll soon realize that you can concentrate entirely on having a good time, and won't have to dedicate much effort to staying safe.
In my years of traveling this country, I have felt safer in NYC than I have felt in just about any other place, whether big city or small town.
Enjoy the city, it's certainly worth the trip! |

Statistically, it's as safe as Boise, Id.
NYC is as safe as the person visiting it.
If you walk around with your head up your ****, flashing wads of cash and tons of jewelry, you are probably going to get mugged. But if you are that clueless, you deserve it.
As for taking your perception of a place by watching TV, Australians would be ignorant buffoons playing with dangerous animals, the English would be toothless cross-dressers who have a fancy for their own sex......get it. |

you probably watched the wrong movies.
of course the gangster ones are going to show the bad part of town and all the drug stuff but not all of it is like that.
Just hang out with the right people and you'll love it. |

I don't know about the safest, but it sure is the best big city in USA or the world. |

Don't know about it being the safest big city but in comparison to what it was like in the late 70's - early 90's, it has definitely improved. Thanks to Giuliani and Bloomberg for staying on the ball. New York like all big cities, you have to take certain precautions. That being, stay away from certain crime ridden areas, don't ride the subways at some god forsaken hour, don't put your pocket book down, lock your car doors, don't go for a stroll in Central Park after dark, be aware of your surroundings. I'm not saying be paranoid, just be careful. In comparison to cities like Detroit, LA, Baltimore we are safer. Boston, I'm sure is pretty safe. Come visit first and see. I personally, love here. Than again I am a born and raised New Yorker. |

depending on which area. meaning upstate new york or the city. if anything go upstate. for one thing there are less problems there than in nyc. new york city crime rate has decreased, but not enough to call nyc the safest biggiest city in the usa. |
