Is San Diego, California a good place to live? |
I'm moving to California in June of 2007 and I was wondering what is the best city, safest city, and cleanest city. I was going to move to Los Angeles until I heard how bad, and dirty it was. I have decided to move to San Diego now, and I was wondering am I making a great choice? Is there anything I should know about San Diego? I found a great place in Downtown San Diego, and was also wondering is the Downtown in San Diego, safe, clean, and beautiful. Or is it like Los Angeles Downtown? Can you easily find work? How far it is from Los Angeles, because I'm in the Entertainment Business also and would need to make frequent trips there for Entertainment and Music purposes. Please let me know, thanks! Additional Details I heard that it is very unsafe to walk in Downtown Los Angeles alone, and especially at night. Is it like the in Downtown San Diego? The zip code for the place I'm at is 92101 is that in a general good area or not? |

I think it's a beautiful city, it's just expensive (real estate) wise to live there. I'm unsure about the apartments though.
The beaches are really beautiful, I mean GORGEOUS beaches. I went Downtown while I was there on my trip, at night...and it seemed pretty safe. Although, I didn't see any cops there (maybe that's a good thing?) They have a lot of clubs and restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter (Downtown area)...check out the House of Blues if you're ever there. You know, they only have 5 right now in the entire USA. Dallas is next on the list.
I think you will LOVE the weather...who wouldn't?
I'm not sure if you can easily find work there, San Diego is 2 hours from Los Angeles and there is a high way...called the 5 which takes you there...pretty much all the way to San Fransisco (which is 5 hrs from San Diego). And also South on San Diego...Tijuana, Mexico.
There is a Navy base in San Diego, so it is very influenced by the military. I thought the Navy base was beautiful...I mean, everything is there. There are nice hills and many houses that are sitting on top of them...many of the homes are very close together.
I hope I have answered some of your questions...I think San Diego would be a nice place to live! |

San Diego is 100 miles or so from LA. And you can take Amtrak. San Diego is the best place in the USA and I have been everywhere. But its expensive so get to work. |

San Diego is not "a good place to live," it's a great place to live.
It has great weather (hardly ever rains and the temp. is moderate year around), great views (the Bay is beautiful), great things to do (Sea World, Zoo, sports, beaches), great restaurants (too many to list), great living areas (Coronado, La Jolla, Imperial Beach), and LA is a great distance away (far enough away to not affect San Diego living, but close enough to drive in an hour if you really have to go there).
If it weren't for the fact that I already live in the greatest place to live (San Francisco Bay area), I'd be living in the great San Diego area somewhere. |

Yes it's OK. Way cleaner and safer than LA.
As usual, in any city you have to be careful where you decide to live. Downtown is a lot of fun and is probably safer than most big city downtowns, but there are areas downtown that I wouldn't want to live in or near. Be sure and check it out before signing the lease. As a general rule, probably the north part of the city is a better bet. |

If you're sure about San Diego, La Jolla would be the best place to go. It's clean and beautiful, plus the beach is right there! Otherwise, i would actually recommend the OC, like Newport Beach, HUntington, Laguna, those are the best places. It's cleaner but the city is a little bit smaller than San Diego, plus it's safer too. It's about half an hour away from LA but that's including all the traffic, so it's really close.
Another very safe and beautiful city that's even closer to LA is Anaheim. Even downtown is safe.
The only bad part is that all of these places are pretty expensive, but worth every penny! |

I had stayed in San Diego for 2 months earlier this year. In the La Jolla area, rental is quite expensive. I have nieces there who are staying with friends. They are students of UCSD
( University of California, San Diego). They are renting a $2,000 house, $400 each , since there are 5 of them. A friend also lives nearby, his rental is more than $1,000 for a 2 bedroom apartment. However, this area is quiet, mostly students.
Before I went to San Diego, I bought 2 maps, however, when I arrived there, I found both incomplete. I again both another more complete one but it is very small that you need a magnifying lens to read it. San Diego is widespread unlike San Francisco in which you can follow the map very well. I suggest that you ride the trolley! It will give you a better view of San Diego. There are buses in most trolley station!
My nieces & cousin used to live in San Diego, they transferred to LA for work. They miss San Diego, however, there is no opportunity for them to work there. However, some of my friends had been working here for more than 10 years & they really love San Diego.
Corona, California is getting popular. People from LA usually go there to rent apartments & work in LA!
I had tried riding Greyhound & Amtrak going to LA. Traffic is very congested in LA.
If you will be travelling from San Diego & LA. Another suggestion is Orange County. I love the neighborhood here. I had been to Irvine, Alisso Viejo & Laguna Nigiel, all have refined people. In San Diego there are alot of Mexicans since it is in the border but they are really hard working! You might need to learn to speak in Spanish.
My advice, explore first San Diego if there is any job available for you there! After finding a job, look for a place to rent nearby. |

San Diego is a great place to live. It is way cleanlier and nicer than LA. LA is over rated!!=P |

As others have told you...the drive to LA is likely to be more than 2 hours given the traffic.
The drive to SF is likely to be around 8 hours (not 5 like someone else was saying).
If you'll be driving to LA more than once a week than you should really be living their.
There are lots of good places to live in LA. You may want to check Los Feliz and Silverlake. Both are areas that are being gentrified, so there are lots of bars and restaurants and you'll likely feel very comfortable. |

yes it is a great place to live i mean it is right next to the beach and there is "Sea World" and my friend lives their and she loves it. |

There are some seedy areas of downtown San Diego. Generally I would say south of Broadway is much nicer than north of Broadway. But downtown SD is still not nearly as bad as LA or San Francisco.
Work can be pretty hard to find, but it really depends on what line of work you are looking for. If it is entertainment, you would obviously do much better in LA.
2 hours driving from downtown san diego to downtown LA...bad traffic can make that up to 6 hours, but if you can avoid heavy commute times it isn't bad at all. |

You'll be about a 2 hour drive (if there is light or no traffic) from LA. Downtown areas are never perfect, but downtown San Diego is becoming quite nice. There is a waterfront, great for walking; a waterfront park, great for picnics and dogs; Balboa Park for museums and culture; Petco Park, great for Major League Baseball; the Gaslamp Quarter, great for movies, shops and lots of restaurants and bars; Little Italy, no comparison to NY, but it's very cute, and convenient; and the San Diego trolley system gets you around pretty easily. All this in walking distance throughout downtown SD. There are a multitude of new condominiums, so what was a high crime area has now cleaned up quite a bit. If you found a place that you can afford, go for it. |

I went to San Diego a few years ago and I thought it was great. It's definitely safe, clean, and beautiful, but I have no idea how easy it is to find work there. |

Definitely. Some parts are better than other, and some are very expensive, like La Jolla, but the weather is wonderful. Its 2 hours (around) to LA, and I think that there are a lot of work oppurtunities open. |
