Is Vegas meant for gamblers or for families?

OK, this is a very hot and touchy subject but I must ask the question: Is Vegas meant for gamblers or for families? Las Vegas is supposed to be America's ADULT-only playground, why are there so many people bringing their precious, bundles of joy, pushing strollers around at ALL TIMES and just basically, getting in the way? I recently read that Vegas casino owners realized their mistake in making Vegas a "family destination" and are trying to reverse course and bring back the way it used (and should) be. Anyone agree? Comments?

Well this is only my view and it is maybe a little narrow. Vegas is for me to go and drink, smoke and gamble for hours on end not knowing if it is night or day. I want to ogle pretty women and maybe even dance with a few. I want to walk about with a refreshing alcoholic beverage and people watch without bumping into little timmy and his parents as they are trying to find TJ McFunsters so they can get the kids eat free deal. Families should stick to Disney and magic mountain and all that. Vegas has nothing for them, they are just in the way.

I have been going to Vegas from the UK since I was 21. Im now 30. My opinion is that it is better without kids.

I know some hotels cater for them more than others, but its still not the best place for them. If I had a $1 for every time I see a security guard moving on a parent playing a slot machine while their kid(s) are sat on the carpet to the side.

I want to swim up to the side of the pool and sip my cocktail not be splashed by a kid dive bombing into the water.

both

there are places just for gamblers, adult entertainment, and places for whole families to enjoy.

What the @#$% do you think it was made for.

zippythejessi
It's meant for adults - not necessarily gamblers, but adults who want to relax, let their hair down, and have a good time. It should go back to the way it used to be.

And before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, I *KNOW* there's families with children who live there, but most people who live there stay away from the Strip and Downtown for the most part, and once you leave those areas, Las Vegas is as generic as any other place in the US. I am specifically addressing the areas aimed at tourists.

There are lots of activities for families in Vegas, but at the end of the day... They want the gamblers, the clubbers and the high end shoppers.

Vegas is in the middle of reinventing itself and I guarantee that alot of those family friendly activities are going to be phased out. Some of them have started already, Circus ,Circus has taken out it's main attraction which was mostly for families and the TI Pirate show is now a Siren (read: burlesque) show that caters mostly to adults only.

I think that Vegas was trying to build themselves a family image and then realised it was bad for business. I visit alot of hotels in my work and when I ask them what their target markets is it's all "White collar adults, blue collar adults" ... Of course, they would never turn families with children out of their rooms but they don't make money. AND let's face it, no matter how many rollar coasters they build and how many "free" drinks they give out... Vegas is about making money.

In my personal opinion, I don't think that Vegas is for families. I have seen too many children waiting in the elevator lobby for Mommy to finish up on the slot machine.

Yea right Vegas is so not for families...Yea there's a little bit of stuff for kids but it's just a way to bring in the parents....I don't think they really want young kids in the casino....I know my dad was telling me when we first moved out here they wouldn't let you bring in strollers to the casino's I don't think much has really changed except they don't tell you, you can't come in with kids they would just rather you don't and sit down and gamble....

Vegas was losing business in the late 80's and early 90's, which is when they decided to cater to families and built all the family friendly attractions and the themed resorts (MGM Grand used to have a theme park, the Luxor had a water ride and other kid attractions and Excalibur speaks for itself). Now Vegas is reversing that trend and getting away from being a family themed destination to more of an adult playground again (a good example is Treasure Island changing their sign and changing the pirate show from a family friendly one to a more sexy/risque one). There are still things for families with kids to do, but fewer and farther between.

Vegas is for ADULTS!

Las Vegas is not a "family" destination. Why would you take your kids to a place where when they do something as simple as walk down the street they are being handed business cards for whores with naked pictures? The cards are all on the ground for viewing. You can't help but see them. Secondly, everyone is walking down the street drinking open alcohol all day and night. When you go into the hotels, you can't help but walk through the casinos where the smoke is relentless...not to mention more alcohol...and whores.

The bottom line is take your kids to Florida, LA, Chicago, anywhere except Vegas.

And let all the adults who use Sin City as their playground say....AMEN.

Vegas tried the appeal to families in the 1990's.

I think that they found out that parents don't gamble.

So they went back to targeting degenerates. Now risque shows have made a return, and most properties have topless pool areas.

Definitely not a family environment anymore.

The LV tourism board's motto is "What happens here stays here". That's all you need to know if you think they are still catering to families.

I think I saw part of a show on the travel channel one time about Vegas. It can be both. The casinos are for adults only, of course, but Vegas also has many attractions and things for families to enjoy as well.

I think its meant only to vacation
Because to live here sucks!

The school system is soo horrible
The behavior schools that are supposed to punish the kids have drug addict teachers

I agree with the original poster, Vegas is not for kids! Why the hell would you take your child to a place that is known as "Sin City"?

Michael M
Both it a town that reinvents itself. You as a gambler can have fun and if you have a family a great time as well.
This place is built on travel and tourism and return visits.

leprechaun3833
A family of gamblers

Zippy
I vote for Gamers Familys and yes I have had one are ment to go to other places we few degenerate Gamers need our space

smashingdelite
Strongly disagree - just came back from a family vacation from LV and my kid enjoyed as much as we did , there were a host of activities to do - Madam Tussauds , The Stratosphere , MGM , Rainforest Cafe , Gondola rides at the Venetian , Circus - Circus , M & M's world , shopping , helicopter rides to Grand Canyon & Hoover Dam etc etc . If you only go to gamble / adult shows then dont take your kids along or leave them with babysitters arranged through the conceirge of your hotel but let others take along their kids and enjoy...........Las vegas is not just about gambling n adults shows . Its much much more.......

Vegas tried to become a family playground back in the 80's, it failed. But families have to travel and some wind up in Vegas. I go every few years and have noticed people with there kids but it doesnt get to me.

Vegas will always be Vegas. People will always take their kids to inappropriate places. Maybe they have to, or not. No matter what, Vegas will never be able to "outlaw" kids. Families live there too.

Vegas 24/7
It's meant for both gamblers and families.

Gamblers can gamble in the casino while kids play at the pool, theme park, arcade, or roller coaster. I haven't heard that casino owners considered making Las Vegas a family destination a mistake. There's room for adults and kids in Las Vegas.

laylajai74
Both, If you go to station casinos then they have day care but its not just day care your kids can order what ever they want they have nintendo games big jungle jim thing i dnt know what they call it but its huge its 6.00 ph just bring shot records. then there is circuscircus for kids they have the adventure dome then at the g nugget they have where u can swim in the pool and there are sharks in there own aqaurium but its like you are swimming with sharks. There is mini grand pri on rainbow/ smoke ranch go carts games
then at fiesta station casino there is ice skating and if you want to gamble why your kids ice skate you can do that too.
and right next door is texas station where there is a movie theater and arcade as well!

lb3553
I think that the casino owners chose the right course by making Vegas a family friendly destination, because families make up a good portion of their revenue. You have to think of how much more money you would make off a family of four versus two adults. Actually my parents took my sister and I to Vegas when we were about ten. My father spent plenty of time in the casino while us girls spent money shopping. We also went to many of the shows and other tourist attractions. I definitely think that small children which need strollers and such should not be brought to a play like Vegas but for older children I think it is fine.

There is nothing wrong with having both an adult and children's environment. Most casinos are finding out that it pays to have both. Look at this list and see for yourself http://www.lasvegas-how-to.com/entertain-kids.html there are just tons of activities for kids in Vegas.

ZULU23
NO KIDS ALLOWED!!!! WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO EVEN TRY TO KICK IT IN VEGAS WITH THE RUG RATS.
