I moved here right out of college and I love it. I don't work in politics (I'm in publishing), but I do think it's interesting to be in a place where so many decisions are made. There is a lot to do here, a lot of great restaurants, fun nightlife, and a plurality of young professional people. Some areas are in need of some urban renewal, and like any large city it definitely has rough parts of town, but overall I think it's a great place to live. |

I lived in the DC area for 25 years and it's a pretty good place to live. Considering it is the nation's capital it is fairly inexpensive, there are a lot of things to do (just going thru the museums would take a few years) and it is a small city. NE and SE can be pretty bad and run down. It is the black area so nobody cares to fix it but it is the same in any city.
True NYC would be more exciting but then again it is very expensive.
There's definitely a lot worse than DC. The only reason we left is to buy land in the country. |

It is kinda run down in some parts, but I love it. Believe me there are worse cities to live. Also there are a lot of beautiful places in the city. DC is gradually being revitalized. |

We call that "character".
DC is made of neighborhoods and each hood is its own small town. I've lived in Adams Morgan for 20 years and can't think of anywhere else I want to live. |

DC is like a large suburb. You have the cultural aspect that comes with a city in the way of theatre, opera, etc... at the kennedy Center. Additionally, you have more free museums in Washington, DC than in any other US city. You can either drive everywhere or take public transportation. And because of the restrictions per the height of buildings it won't feel like your typical "city." There are plenty of actual houses on the market if you want to live in a city, but in a house instead of a condo/apt. The city has a professional team for every sport. Etcetera etcetera....
Obviously, like any city, it has its good parts and its bad parts. For an international city I will express my disappointment in the quality of the restaurants, but overrall it's a good place to live and a good place for a family (speaking of which, in the suburbs, the school systems are tops in the country). |

Lived in dc all my life...yes it is a good place to live but not to raise a family (upper northwest, maybe) If you are single and a profesional DC is a nice place, tons of young profs. tons to do from the the best bars, restaurants, hot nightlife, I would say yes. |

OK, the last guy that said DC is fairly inexpensive is just smoking crack. Born and raised in the VA suburbs of DC. Prior to my move to SC, the prices and overcrowding forced me all the way out to Winchester, VA. Check a map, it isn't close. Yet, those are the suburbs where people are moving right now. Most can't afford the close suburbs, and not many want to live in the city because of high taxes and high corruption.
That being said, the same can be said about any city. DC is a great place in that there is always something to do. Tons of museums that, thanks to the Smithsonian Institution, are completely free. The best zoo I've visited. Georgetown. There is always some sort of festival going on. Conversely, there is always some sort of protest going on.
If you live in DC, the only way to do it is to live IN DC. The traffic in the outlying suburbs makes one contemplate suicide. The Metro is only affordable within the city, perhaps out to Rosslyn.
All I can say is that the day I escaped that pit was the best day of my life. Many people like it, though. It is a great city to visit, don't think I could / would ever live there again. |

I went there many times and I found a nice suburb to be in called "laurel" which is outside of DC. Its near "columbia".
I always had a good time there and it was nice and safe.
I probably been there about 10 different times and I never once went to DC. I had no desire to go to DC. A trip to baltimores "inner harbour" is much more enticing.
There are alot of nice golf courses there also with BIG tree's on them. Quite enjoyable :)
PS - If you get to laurel, go drink a few at the Green Turtle.
Great pub with good food. |

As a native washington, I would vote no unless you love politics or work for the government. Living in D.C. is horrible becasue of the outrageous taxes you pay. THoguh this is the nations capitol, there are definately parts of D.C. to avoid at all costs by fear of a drive by shooting, mugging, or stabbing. We are proud to have the #1 ranking as far as highest crime in the country :) |
