Is crime a problem in New Orleans?

Suprisingly, I have heard from some residents of NO who insist that there isn't a crime problem and that it is all media hype.

I live here and crime is a problem. Along with the crime as the shootings. You would not imagine how many shootings they have per day here. I was shocked to find out how many actually take place per day. I am looking forward to getting out of here.

?
I think it really depends which residents you ask in which district of New Orleans.

Yes, the demographics of the remaining people isnt that great. Huge crime rate and low income equals bad area.

yes there is a crime probelm, always has been one and always will be on, but i personally don't think it is as big as the media pays it out to be, its in very concentraed areas of the city, that most residents don't even go into. the FQ is fine and perfectly safe/

in the French quarter (tourist area) the police do a great job with crime prevention but outside the area, crime is a problem.

I went to the mardi gras right before katrina- while watching the news one morning i was shocked to hear that 5 murders occurred the night before all within blocks of where i was staying(canal street in the french quarter)- some of the streets i even passed late night on the walk home- from what i've heard its gotten worse!- can't imagine what its like now albeit the french quarter is still safe and beautiful to visit- stay away from outlying areas though

after working in New Orleans after Katrina and Rita I have found the crime rate has SKYROCKETED! The murder rate alone is outstanding! There are many many crimes that don't even get reported (I have spoke to many people who won't report a robbery because it NEVER gets solved) The police are VERY busy writing tickets for speeding and rounding up dead beat dads...seems that is the priority there...so YES the crime in New Orleans IS A BIG PROBLEM!! I personally wouldn't live there and if anyone is thinking of moving there DON'T not only do you increase your chances of being killed the high rents and substandard medical care is the PITS!

You bet there is a crime problem in New Orleans. I live here, and since Katrina, murder and drug related homicides are on the rise.

Yes, there is a crime problem in certain neighborhoods. How bad it is/isn't depends on whom you ask.

I think the difference of opinion you're hearing is because in the bad areas, the crime is really, really bad; but for you as a person visiting the city, most of the areas where you'd be visiting or going out to hear music or eat food are just fine.

does a bear poo in the woods? YES Theres a major crime problem! THe reason u get varied answers is bc it is very sporadic in the areas. For instance, uptown isnt too bad, and the northshore is pretty crime free, but midcity and other areas of NOLA are crime ridden. We have the highest murder rate for a reason--and when u think that our per capita is down, that's really sad.

Yea, there is still a crime problem there..

delriokid08
Oh yea! Crime was a problem when I lived there (and I lived in Metairie). I can't even imagine what it's like post-Katrina. Remember that there were crazy people shooting at their rescuers after Katrina.

Unfortunately crime will be a problem as long as there is greed or people feel that life owes them something.

A huge problem, that I don't want to live in New Orleans, and I was born and raised here, but now I live 30 miles away in LaPlace.
