20 % of the prison population in Hawaii is addicted to crystal meth. It is not so much a new problem, as it has become a political venture, and the additional media attention paid to the problem has resulted in "meth-mania"; and the surge toward cleaning up the entire island.

The "war on ice" declared CA 2000 by Mayor of the Big Island Harry Kim breathed new life into the fight against crystal meth. The addictive nature of the substance by its very nature has defined the extent of the problem, in that it is one of the most addictive drugs. Most chronic users will die from their addiction, unless they seek proper, effective treatment.

The state Department of Health's Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division (ADAD) reported last month that annual treatment admissions for ice addiction nearly doubled again from 1998 to 2002.

The ice problem is as bad as the media and government have made it out to be in Hawaii. The only problem is that it is a problem in dozens of other states as well, and until proper recognition is given to that fact, many addicts will go untreated.

Hawaii tops at the worse state to have problems with Crystal Meth. It's sad....a former boss of mine once told me that some locals are unemployed because they can't pass any drug test when it comes to getting hired for a job. They end up getting withdrawn from the job.

The reality is that Crystal Meth and any type of illegal drug opiates is an epidemic, State wide and throughout the Nation. Such activities as the selling and the use of these drugs creates so much problems within the family unit and within the State. Over-crowding of the Prison is also problematic because majority of the inmates are incarcerated due to drug related charges.

However bad it is in Hawaii, it's the same result in other States. In order to know how bad it is, one would have to sit with Counselors from a Drug rehab center and/or find out how many inmates are incarcerated on drug charges, let alone sit with Families who have gone through hardship due to the drug use and/or distribution. Maybe then, One would have a better understanding on how bad Crystal Meth is.

chinatown is the worse, meth is a ******* epidemic there, meth is pretty bad in hawaii but bob has noticed that crack has got a lot more popular cause when the addicts dont got enough money they go for crack rocks instead.

Spend 30 minutes on Ft. Street Mall in downtown Honolulu or in Honolulu's Chinatown and you'll see the horrible effects of Ice in Paradise.

Seems to be an issue in Hilo on the Big Island as well. Didn't see much of it on Kauai (couple of iceheads in Kapa'a). I think Maui Wowie still is the popular choice on Maui.

Yeah. I 'm from the the Big Island. Hilo , but Crystal Meth is a huge problem there.My mom is a probation officer in Hilo and she has told me in the past about the how many of her probationees are addicted to meth .Its sad. Honokaa is not the only place on the Big Island that it is bad. I think its just as bad in Pahoa and Puna as well.

Yes, illegal drugs are at an all time extreme level of usage! Prescription drugs and home made varieties all leading to detrimental results! Brain injury, disability, sex without cognitive understanding, illegitimate brain damaged infants, overflowing mental institutions, deranged persons wandering homeless in search of drugs, theft, explosions and fires trying to "cook" recipes of drugs, prostitution, a huge population of drug disabled citizens depending on government support to live or attacking and robbing other citizens. Ultimately, many unnecessary drug overdose deaths.

Yes it is a huge problem. I knew a few addicts and didn't know they were addicts. It's worse in Arizona? I'm moving there soon. I guess you can't get away from it.

i used to live in hawaii and did not hear anything about meth..but i think they do have a lot of meth...from what ive heard...
