Detroit is like any other city. It has it bad parts and it has it good parts. If your sister is going there for work, then more than likely she will be in the business section, which is not a bad part of detroit. Your sister doesn't have to stay in the hotel, but just take a cab or drive a rental car. No reason to walk anywhere. And know where she is going if she is driving because you don't want to get lost. She should be safe. |

Detroit is cool as long as she is not just waundering up into any old neighborhood but downtown is cool and 8mile is just a main road that runs east and west with steady moving traffic nothing to worry about as long as she stays out of the bad neighborhoods and not walking around late at night its all good. Detroit is not the horrible place everyone makes it out to be. I have lived there for years and has never had one problem. |

Depends on what part of Detroit!! Downtown is relatively safe about the same as any other big city.. The neighborhoods surrounding downtown are not the best... PS: There just movies do not base off of them.. |

Well I live in Detroit and some areas I'm afraid to venture into so I see your concern. However,I will say if your sister is in the Downtown area she will be fine because lots of police officers are in the area since many suburbanites go down there for entertainment and what not. She should do what you should do wherever you go and that's just be aware of her surroundings. |

No gary, indiana is the armpit of america b/c of the raw industry there. Everyone knows of the horendous stench Gary has. Detroit does not have a stench, but there is a 2 mile stretch on southbound i-75 just past downtown that smells, Gary has an overlaying stench in the city. |

Please add to your question with more details about where your sister will be working and where she is staying.
Working downtown and staying in Farmington has a 180 degree different reality than working on Charlevoix and staying at the Crest Motel.
More information will get you better - more acurate answers. |

Well first let me just say that forming an opinion of a city based on fictional movies is absurd. As far as whether or not Detroit is dangerous, that would depend on the area. Detroit is like any other large city, it has it's good and bad areas. You would need to be more specific before anyone can give you a good answer. |

im originally from detroit. im sorry to say this but tell her to not go anywhere in the city without full knowledge of where she is going. otherwise you may be giving her description to the network news folks. detroit is as bad as it seems on tv. there are exceptions. greek town and the areas right around the casinos are in fact very beautiful and safe. however, if you go two blocks into the neighborhoods nearby, go packin. i love my old hometown but am so saddened that the idiots who live there still think that they will be alright because someone who looks like them is in the mayor's office. this has been the downfall of the city ever since the election of ole coleman young. if the citizens will just look to intelligent, conservative, pro-business people to run the city and push all the losers and criminals out, they could turn things around quickly.
just tell your sis to stay near her hotel unless she has a reliable escort. and no matter what stay off woodward below 8 mile at night. |

Detroit can be a pretty cool city, Downtown is fun, like Greek town and all of the Casinos. There are a lot of concerts there and tech fest memorial day weekend. the downtown area is really fun, like any other city. Of course there are a lot of bad areas but if you were just visiting I'm sure you woundn't be going to those places so you don't need to worry about it. |

first off, 4 brothers or 8 mile was a watered down depiction if the city, the inner city is horrible, but downtown is safe. |

Every city has its ghettos as well as has their good and safe areas, it just depends on where you go, for an example, not every part of eight mile is a ghetto area.
Don't Make your judgments based off of some movie.
Because neither one of those movies were really true, based on true stories to an extent only, and to be truthful, those movies were more fiction than fact.
Not all of Detroit looks like what you seen on eight mile and four bothers. |

Detroit is a nice place. Yes, it has bad neighborhoods, and they're pretty easy to spot before you even enter them, so DON'T. It's just like any other big city: Some areas are nice, others are bad.
If she doesn't know the town, then tell her to stick with the downtown area. Greektown is a great place to go for meals or drinks. |
|

you can take it or leave it....

Is she going to be in Detroit, or in metro Detroit? There is a big difference. I grew up in Oakland County (Waterford/Bloomfield Hills) which is nice and it is about 45min-1hr from Detroit. Yes Detroit is Ghetto, but there are parts, like by the river that they have re-done that are nice. Most of the crime happens in the neighborhoods and its usually drug related. |

Lets put it this way,,,,,,,
Would you judged LA of the movies menace to society and boyz in DA hood.
Or judge new york from movies like warriors and other ghetto gangster type of movies?
Just like any other place in the world, Detroit does have its ghettos, projects and, crappy trailer parks and so on, but it also has its nice and SAFE areas.
Those movies that took place in Detroit only showed a very small portion of Detroit in a very particular area, and The part of 8 mile that the movie was about was the north side of 8 mile that isn't even Detroit.
United we stand, your the only armpit of america i know of, why dont you go suck george bushes cock. |

Is she working in the city proper, or one of the many suburbs?
I say that because a lot of people when referring to the Detroit metropolitan area, simply refer to it as Detroit.
I don't know about you but I'd be afraid of my sis walking around anywhere alone at night, Detroit or May berry,
urban, suburban, or rural, big city or cornfields, there's just to many creeps out there. |

Detroit is; without a doubt, a ghetto.
Run down areas abound - large protions of this city look like some third world country in the midst of a war!
Quite possibly the worst city in America. Gary is nothing more than an industrial city - but it is also a city that has functioning businesses ... look around Detroit, alot of it is vacant, run down areas! |
