Is going to New York City alone for the day dangerous? |
I'll be taking a bus there, walking to a venue, seeing a show, walking back to the bus station, and taking a bus home, then a taxi to my house. At the show, I'll be meeting up with a friend who's in one of the bands playing. I'm nearly 16. Is this dangerous? |

No, everyone else does it. Just use common sense. Don't do anything stupid, and just watch out for yourself. You'll be fine. Most importantly, rather than worrying about it, just remember to have a good time. |

Just always be aware of your surroundings |

Sounds perfectly safe. Remember, with 8 million people the odds are you have every type of person from saints to devils. But even the most criminal have enough sense to realize that starting something in broad daylight in the midst of a crowd of people is not the route to a long and happy career as a criminal. Even at night, much of NYC is safe, at least through midnight, as there are loads of people out and about. |

While I wouldn't advocate anybody going anywhere by themselves if they've never been to that particular place, in your case, you won't really be alone. Your friend will be there. Just make sure you let someone know where you'll be, and approximately what times, so if something does happen, that person will have an idea of where to look for you at. |

NYC Manhattan is the most wonderful place in the world to visit! The people are so helpful and kind to visitors. Being 16 can mean many different things. Some 16 yr olds have more common sense than some 30 yr olds.. Here's a few things to think about BEFORE you decide to go.
1.Do you really KNOW the person you are meeting ?or is it someone you met on the internet? If the latter, do NOT go alone.
2. Are you experienced with taking the bus? and how far from NYC do you live?
The bus is fine if you are a mature and responsible person. You can tell the driver you are traveling alone and he will definately keep an eye out for your safety on the trip. My husband and I used to wrk for Greyhound and KNOW this is the truth.
3. Do you know how to use the Subway? Also do you know which one to take to the Venue? Also, since you are not 18 you may not be able to even get IN to the Venue. Is there an age limit? You can get this info from www.nyc.com.
If it's 18 and up DO NOT EVEN GO..
4. My suggestion is to try to get a friend to go with you. Safety in numbers. I do hope you have a wonderful trip if you go but do be very careful. Do not make plans to ever meet up with people you meet on the internet. There are some very dangerous people on there. (And also some nice ones too) :-) Take care of yourself. |

no more dangerous than being in Hollywood by yourself, only thing is you have more chance of running into pervs in hollywood than in NYC. I should know I come from there..Have fun.. |

Are you serious? NO IT IS NOT DANGEROUS. New York is among the safest cities in the world now, but you also have to be in manhattan for that rule to apply. For a rule of thumb, don't go to Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx or Harlem. Anywhere else is perfectly fine. There are more cops in manhattan then any city in the world, the terrorism scare has landed more and more cops on the streets and a by product of that has been lesser crime all over the city. It's a fast paced city, but for a tourist, it's perfectly safe, as long as you don't talk to strangers. If your gonna walk at nighttime, just make sure you don't talk to the homeless or those on the streets just hanging around. They will do ANYTHING, such as ask you for time, ask you to come here a minute, ask yuo for a dime, etc, and as soon as you start talking to them, someone else will run up behind you and snatch your purse. When you go into your purse to take out a dime, he'll punch your jaw and someone else will snatch your purse. Same thing for the time question. But if you ignore them, they will NEVER follow you, or keep running after you. Put on some earphones and pretend your listening to something and can't hear them. Other then that, your perfectly fine. |

No! You are just living and doing stuff in the city like billions of other people around you. Just don't stand still too long, and keep your wits about you.
I walked around Washington DC, took buses and subways when I was 10. |

I live nearby the city, and my friends and I go in alone all the time to see shows. We've been doing it since we were 15. My parents are pretty strict and very overprotective, but even they figured we'd be okay.
As far as going in entirely by yourself, it's not as safe as going with someone, but as long as you avoided alleys and deserted areas (and as long as we're talking about daylight), you should be fine. Just look like you know where you're going, don't look nervous and w/e, and no one will bother you. If you want, even, talk on your cell with someone--or just pretend to--and that'll almost ensure you'll be okay. It can be a scary city, but you should be fine.
Oh, and don't change your plans and decide to take a subway or something. My friend and I did that last time, from an unknown subway station--BAD idea... |

Shouldn't be.
I spent a weekend there a while ago and had no problems, though I did notice that the locals attitude to me got a lot more relaxed when they heard my english accent. |

When I was even younger I use to do the same. I find that if you just keep to yourself you will be fine and don't go looking for too much attention. Don't worry too much, alot of the time any major city any where in the world is hyped up too much, and by people that haven't even been there. Hope you have a wonderful adventure! ; ) |

I am not from NYC but when I went there in 2004 I did not feel unsafe or threatened at all and I am female. Obviously be sensible and do not walk down dark alleys and stuff like that but that is not just in NYC - that is a precaution for everywhere.
Take a mobile phone and let people know where you should be at what time and what time you expect to be back home so in the unlikely event that something does happen they would know your planned movements.
Also, know where you are going and don't get lost. |

It is not dangerous!
If you have your schedule/path planned out and have a good idea of where you are going, you won't have any problems!
Enjoy your day! |

Because of your age I would have to say No, I am a grandmother and I would not want my granddaughter going to New York the way you described, I am sure your parents will worry about you all day, I myself would not be relaxed knowing my daughter was there. You are at an age where I know you want to have fun with your friends, etc., but we live in different times now, and you must always be careful, please consider your decision.!!! |
