Is is safe to walk around Chicago at midnight?

I'll be staying at a hotel on Grand Ave. Is this area generally safe to walk around at midnight? I realize there are several stores in this area but this is going to be my first visit.

The people who answer "NO" to this question are either not from Chicago, or they're retarded. Click on their profiles and you'll see they probably live in Nebraska or something.

Downtown Chicago is a very safe 24/7 and well lit at night...we even have lights in our alleys.

Since I assume you're on Grand in River East where all of the hotels are, you'll see people out well past midnight. There are lots of bars in that area like the Reagle Beagle: http://www.reaglebeaglechicago.com/location.htm , Rock Bottom: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=rock+bottom,+chicago&spell=1 & Boston Blackies: http://bostonblackies.com/ that are open until 2am or later. Does that sound like an area infested by gangs that can't get people in the door after midnight? No, they don't have a problem at all.
In fact in the summer I see lots of midnight movies at a movie theater on Illinois just a block north of Grand, and those shows get out well past 2am. I also work just a few blocks south of Grand and I get out of work well past midnight most nights and never have a problem walking around or waiting for my bus.

Be careful though, you're biggest worry would be homeless people (there are no gangs downtown) asking you for money and believe me if you look like a tourist you're going to be a homeless person magnet! My best advice, be firm & polite. Say "sorry I can't help you but have a good night" and you'll be left alone.

I ACTUALLY LIVE IN CHICAGo! These people have no idea what they're talking about. Midnight is NOT that late. Unless your on the Southside all alone at 2AM, I can assure you'll be fine. Just stay in a well light area with a bunch of people- and keep your purse close to you at all times when in a busy area! Have a great visit!

I've only been to Chicago twice but a few times I was wandering around by myself (drunk) well past midnight in Lincoln Park. I was totally fine, but I think Lincoln Park is a fairly nice neighborhood.

So prob. depends on the neighborhood.

Edit:
And everyone needs to chill out, it's safe in plenty of cities to walk around after midnight. I'm in NYC and do it regularly and have never been mugged in 6 years and counting, there are so many people out and about you have no worries. But again it depends on the neighborhood.

There are a lot of people out and about at midnight.

Treys_Mommy2007@yahoo.com
It's not safe to walk around any where at Midnight unless you go in a large group carry some protection and I don't mean condoms!*

Strats!!
Some parts.

Uh, nope! Chicago is the shooting capital of the US right now. And, everything shuts down by 10:00 pm here, except for downtown. It is not safe to walk the streets at midnight.

bjchi
I've been out by myself much later than midnight (single female).
Like any other large city be aware of your surroundings, try to walk in lighted areas and don't go into areas that make you feel uncomfortable.

Grand and what? Grand is a long street. Parts are good and bad. Crime can happen at anytime in Chicago. Midnight to 2am is one of the peak times though

no! its not safe! it also depends how old you are. Gangs or really drunk people or creppy people can do terrible things when your all alone. Atleast have a few friends with you or go in a place where everyone can see you. Trust me ive had experience...........kind of

no there might be GANGS u are just a tourist thats there best target lol

I don't live there, but based on what i have heard about Chicago, i would'n't recommend it, unless you are in the suburbs, or in a neighborhood that is gated and has big, pretty houses in it.
