Since the early 90's, the subways of the US with the exception of Philadelphia have been extremely safe. They are heavily patrolled, especially in New York and Washington. |

Not anymore dangerous than any crowded city subway system. |

yes, violent gangs who play hip hop all day and hide guns in there floppy clothes hand around all the subways and bash people senseless for something as innocent as a stick of chewing gum.... nah.... its perfectly ok, just keep your wits about you and keep an eye on your belongings |

I was born and raised in NYC and I don't feel unsafe on the Subways here. It used to be bad in the 80s when the lights would flicker on and off on the train as it exited/entered the tunnels and crime in the entire city was high. A lot has changed since then. Just use common sense. Don't ride in the last train car at night or any car that's empty. Be alert and go with your instinct if you think theres' someone who's invading your personal space on the platform/train. Also, keep a safe distance from the edge of the platform especially when the train is coming into the station. |

Any place can be dangerous if you don't pay attention to your surroundings. |

No, just came back from NYC...no problems there...we even and two different people ask us if we needed help while we were looking at a subway map...friendlier than the rap it gets |

Not in NYC. It used to be, but one of Rudi Giulliani's crusades was to clean up the subway and he did a good job of it.
If you're in Manhattan then you'll be really safe, but maybe if you're heading out to the outskirts of the boroughs you might want to be more cautious at night, especially waiting on train platforms alone.
If you're heading to the outskirts of the city, try to do it during the day as you'll have a lot more people around. |

It can be, but if you look aware, focused and you know where you are going, you'll be perfectly fine. |

If you mind your own business you should be fine.
i have taken the NY subways hundered of times and never had a problem.
The worst experience I had was 2 angry black guys yelling racist things at me for no apparent reason. This was late at night at the subway was basically empty |
