Is it a bad idea for my 10 year old daughter and I to go to Las Vegas this summer? |
I want to go somewhere hot and sunny this summer. I do not plan on gambling, just sight seeing and hanging out by a pool. LV is a days drive away and I hear its pretty cheap there. |

I think it's a great idea, I have been taking mine since she was 3, she's 15 now and she absolutely loves Las Vegas.
There is a million and one things for you to do together, and most of them are pretty cheap..
If you will plan ahead and go at the right time, you should be able to book a room very cheap. Avoid large conventions and special events. Sunday through Thursday is cheaper than Friday and Saturday..
check these sites for room rates

for LV info -
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com
the LVA site has a list of all buffets - my favorites for great food at a good value include
Main Street Station - lunch $8 - and while you're there you can check out all the antiques and artifacts they have, including part of the Berlin Wall, and my favorite, the Bronze doors and Facade from the Royal Bank of Kuwait.
Orleans - lunch $8 - the Orleans also has a ton of stuff for kids, Movie theater, bowling, arcade and a Kids Tyme.
Fremont - $16 Their Seafood buffet is my favorite, go after dark and watch the light show on Fremont Street.
Palace Station - $3 breakfast - $4 lunch - $5 dinner, their waffles are the best! - PS recently lowered their buffet prices, if they remain this is an incredible deal...
I suggest staying at a hotel with a great pool, since your daughter will probably want to spend quite a bit of time there...Monte Carlo might be a good choice for you(if the rate is a good one). Luxor is kind of fun, nice pool, a food court, it's cool to stay in the Pyramid rooms. They have an exact replica of King Tut's Tomb as it was found by Howard Carter..
Don't be tempted to stay at Circus Circus, avoid this one. A visit to the Adventure Dome is one thing, staying at CC is another.
Take her to the "fantasy faire midway" at Excalibur if she is into that sort of thing, it's much nicer than the midway at Circus Circus..
Cool free stuff to do
The Fountains of Bellagio
Fremont Street Experience
Volcano/White Tigers - Mirage
Animal Habitat - Flamingo
Lion Habitat - MGM >have photo taken with lion cub
Sunset Stampede - Sam's Town
Sirens of TI - Treasure Island - have to use your judgement on this one, the women in this show wear very little clothing.
Shopping
Forum Shops - Caesars Palace - far and away the best
Desert Passage - Aladdin
Grand Canal Shoppes - Venetian - The Venetian has an indoor "river" where you can ride a gondola.
The Fashion Show Mall
A few must see hotels - they are a sight unto themselves
Luxor
Venetian
Caesars Palace
NY NY - Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty
The Dirk Arthur magic show at Tropicana is kid friendly and a bargain, especially with the 2-4-1 coupon in "Today in LV Magazine" -
It's not free but the views from either the Eiffel Tower or the Stratosphere Tower are worth it.
You can always take day trips to Red Rock Canyon, Mt Charleston, Hoover Dam or Lake Mead.
Well you get the idea, there is a lot for you to do, you would both have a great time...Plan ahead on the room and you can find bargains. A very good time to go is just after Memorial Day. I know the rates have gone up a little but I'm already holding 2 rooms at the Orleans for 4 nights at $24 per night, from May 28th - June 1st(I found that rate the first of November) I was checking for someone else and they are $35 right now.
Have a great time.

Vegas is getting away from the "family friendly" atmosphere they were trying to push ten years ago. Everything is getting real expensive. Comps and hospitality left with the mob. Buffets are $20+ Shows are 100+ and unless you can afford to stay in the highend hotels even the pools suck now. I would hit up a beach city with your daughter. You guys will have a lot more fun and not get chased out of casinos every ten seconds by security guards. |

hmm, I wouldn't if I were you. Not a kids place.. |

Vegas is okay, and relatively kid friendly these days - but Phoenix/Scottsdale aren't much farther, just as warm, and just as inexpensive in the summer.
The Pointe Squaw Peak is LOVELY (huge resort), cheap in the summer, and has wonderful pools, slides and a lazy river.
Scottsdale has great shopping and activities.
Better food in the Phoenix area than Vegas. |

I took my daughter when she was 8 and she had a blast. There is a lot to do there with kids. There is the amusement park inside Circus Circus and a big water park along the strip too. You can always fly to the Grand Canyon. My daughter's favorite part was taking a helicopter tour of the strip at night. Be warned that Vegas is not cheap! |

Not at all, there are plenty of things to do with the kids too. |

If you go to the right area it might be ok but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. Vegas isn't the most kid friendly place. Even if you are not planning on gambling the people and environment of the place is not meant for kids. |

You will probably be ok. It would not be my ideal spot to bring my 10 year old daughter, but if you pick the right resort you will be fine. Check into Circus Cirucs, Excalibur or one of the off strip hotels like the Marriott.
The pool scenes will be far less adult. Do avoid hotels like Hard Rock, Flamingo and Bellagio as their pools tend to have alot of adult type acitivies going on. |

If I had a 10 year old I would not take her. The city is no longer catering to families. It is an adult mecca. |

not at all! my mom used to take me to casinos and I couldn't play or really be in gambling areas, but it's so neat to see. Also, there's about a million things for kids there too... I really enjoyed just walking up and down the strip and looking at the hotels. we did stay at the Luxor (seems to be one of the cheapest newer hotels on the strip) - I wouldn't call that area cheap, but they have great pools! |

It really depends on where you go.
I went last year and I had a ton of fun at Circus Circus. There was a lot of stuff there for kids.
Also there is an aquarium at Mandolay Bay. This was really neat b/c you got to touch some of the fish and I think some type of Manta Ray. It was really neat. There were a lot of kids there.
As long as you keep away from some of the other attractions and shows I don't see a problem with taking your child there.
I would suggest going online and checking out some of the sites in the area to see which are kid friendly and which are not.
Just remember thought to try to stay off the strip at night. And not to let your child hold any cash b/c it's very easily pick pocketed there.
Just be safe and smart and I am sure you will both have a great time. |

The pools, water parks and other things are fun even for a kid in Vegas; but I would NOT choose to go there in the summer when it can easily be well over 105 degrees. It's not cheap, either, if you want to find a hotel with a good pool. |

I don't think it's a good idea simply because it is a 21 and over place- she would not have much fun there. True, it is cheap there but not much for kids to do. I am not sure where you live, but you may consider Florida- I think it is more kid-friendly. |

Why would it be a bad idea? Vegas has gotten family friendly, with the exception of the strip clubs. Other than the blazing heat, it should be a blast. |

I absolutely do not recommend it! I was just in Las Vegas last week, for the first time in 10 years. I was shocked at how overgrown and overrun it has become in such a short period of time. It is a full-on adult playground and NOT a place for children in any way, shape, or form. It is also not cheap. It used to be many years ago, but with the advent of all the mega-casinos, restaurants, and upscale retail, that's all gone.
I'm 38 and was with my 68 year old mom driving down Las Vegas Boulevard last week. We're originally from Philadelphia and not easily intimidated. We got stuck in traffic on the Strip for over an hour and were genuinely uncomfortable about how ominous and desperate the whole place felt.
We also saw several families and we both commented at how crazy we thought they were for bringing small kids. We couldn't wait to get out of that atmosphere and get back to our off-strip hotel.
If you just want somewhere warm with some sights and a pool, I'm sure there are plenty of other options within your one-day drive radius. Best of luck! |

Try going to Buffalo Bills, It's on the border of CA., and it's cheaper than Vegas, and only about a half hour away from there. Here's the number if you're interested. 702 386-7867 |
