The subway system is not as confusing as it may seem. The signage on each station is clear (follow the black and white hanging signs) for exits as well as train information (times a train stops, track a train line is on, transfers, etc). And if you still aren't sure, you can always ask a token booth clerk or view a subway map (two are posted in each subway car and there is one at every subway station) Sure it may feel like a "sardine can" during rush hours, and yeah there could be areas that smell. But for $2.00, it is the fastest game in town.
Whereas, yes you would be comfortable in a taxi and it would get you to your exact destination. But you are paying more (as one poster said...$2.50 just to get in and 40 cents per unit, depending on the traffic. Also, if you catch a cab between 4PM to 8PM, $1.00 is slapped onto the fare for "peak hour" usage. Then after 8PM to 6AM, 50 cents is slapped on for night surcharge. That all adds up.
So think of it this way....so you smell things on the subway, but it hits less in the pocket in the long run. And as one person said, get one of those day Metrocards that let you ride all the buses and subways in one day. Plus you don't have to tip the conductor or the motorman! |

The subway is always going to be cheaper...its only 2 bucks per ride. Get your self a subway map. It's really not that bad. I wouldn't worry about not knowing the subway perfectly. Most locals need a map to choose a route if they've never been to the destination before! |

Take the train. If you're going anywhere on Manhattan Island, take the train to the closest stop and walk the few blocks to get to where you wanna go.
You can buy a 1-day Unlimited Metrocard (fun-pass) for $7 which is good for 24 hours after your first swipe. Take into account that it's $2 a swipe, and after you use your Metrocard 4 times you will already have gotten more than your money's worth. |

Unless you're carrying a lot of stuff use the subway . The subway is not only the cheapest way around Manhattan and the other boroughs but it's by far the fastest way to get places. You may not know this but NYC cabs charge for distance driven and time stuck in traffic so time becomes a real issue . I would take doubleP's advice and get a $7.00 metrocard and have fun exploring the city for the day .
If you get lost or confused just ask somebody for help .Contrary to popular opinion New Yorkers are actually very friendly and very helpful to lost tourists |

The subway is always cheaper.
In Manhattan it's all North/South, and a couple lines run east and west.. (7 across 42nd St. and L across 14th St comes to mind) and all of the lines execpt for the 4/5/6 (green line) run on the west side! what could possibly be so difficult???
And it smells pretty good, unless someone just happened to "take care of some business" right where you happen to be standing.
Besides Taxis and/or their drivers often smell worse than the subway. |

Well, you have to take a taxi if you want to not have to face the subway, but you know it will be much more expensive! |

No question about it - take subway for $2 you can cross the entire city. Subways are safe and quick. Taxi usually takes as much time and you have to tip them. |

EITHER MODE YOUR HAIR WILL BE STANDING ON END WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT THE DESTINATION. THE TAXI WILL COST MORE, AT LEAST, THATS HOW IT USED TO BE. |

Subway. You can get like weekend/3-day passes I think where you can ride unlimited for a certain number of days. Although the most expensive cab ride I've ever taken was in Cincinnati, Ohio. Chicago and NYC were cheaper. Can you believe that?! |

well it depends how far you are going. the subway is probably going to be cheaper but remember, the subway doesn't stop wherever you want, you will have to get out and walk to your final detonation where as with a taxi, it will take you right to wherever you would like to go. |

subway is less expensive, but a taxi saves you wear & tear .... and that translates sometimes into the less "expensive" choice ..... |

I say the subway is cheaper. It may be not pleasant but it better than taking a taxi. The fare on the subway is $2, while the taxi charges you by the meter, beginning with $2.50 base fare when enter the cab and 50 cents very minute. And if you get stuck in traffic and the meter keeps going up, you look at a fare of about $ 10 to $20. I would better go with the subway.
If you a first time subway rider, may I suggest getting a subway map from the token booth and carry it with you at all times. |

It all depends on where you go everyday, and how bad the trafiic is. If its not too far, and you dont m,ind, then walk, but if you dont like the subway, taxi is best. Subways can be confusing. Of course, i live in New Jersey, and the closest thing i've ever been to a subway, was the store. lol |

Well i lived in Now York City...
Well OK i think the bus station would be better because the taxi is more expensive and everything because it depends on how far you are going but the taxi is also faster so if you are running late take the taxi. |
