Listen, a lot of us in Northern California consider Southern California to be a separate state.
If you judged all of California based solely on LA then you might as well judge the entire frickin' United States on LA!!!

I hate to have to agree with you, but so many ppl I've met in LA were really soulless and sometimes really vicious. Worse than the stereotypical New York city rude person. California however is a really diverse state and you will meet all kinds of ppl. You'll also see that there are all kinds of cities and towns, each with their own personalities.

northern california is a great place with real people and so are other parts of southern california outside of that city.

No, it's not fair! California is a wonderful place, despite the bad wrap it gets. A lot of Northern Californians do not appreciate LA's tainting of their fabulous state. I hope you meet some nice people who can show how nice California is. Leave LA quickly!

No it is not. Because, LA is just one city. It doesn't mean that evrybody in California acts that way. LA is LA, its not all of California. You can't judge a state solely based on one city.
Up where LA is Hollywood, thats why there is fake ppl. But if you go to other townscities their not the same. So pls don't judge California and Californians soely on LA. I'm a Californian, and i know for the fact that California is not all people who use people.
Go to other places in Califonia and you will see.

Just like cultural differences across the country, Los Angeles culture varies from its other city neighbors 20 miles away or 200 miles away. Having been raised in LA county to age 18 and then doing college in Northern California, I instantly saw a big difference in the average person my age. LA people were quite fake and pretentious. I loved meeting real people in NoCal so I have stayed these past 25 years.

"Beauty is only skin Deep" In LA that's really true, because that's all you ever really see. Thank God superficiality is not the rule throughout California.

Is it fair to judge you just on your appendix? Just because it has no real purpose doesn't mean the rest of the state has no purpose.

I'm a really positive person too and a lot of people FROM L.A. are too. Sounds like you met a lot of the imports. People that are flaky, fake and have ulterior motives can't stand the small towns that they grew up in because everybody knows everything about everybody in town. They come to L.A. for anonymity. They don't have to live up to anyone's expectations, not even their own. That's because you probably won't bump into the same person ever again in a big city. Those kind of people care too much about their privacy. Which makes the rest of us keep to ourselves.

Just like anywhere else, most L.A. natives were brought up by good parents and taught morals, manners and hospitality.

Sorry you met the unpleasant people that our big city attracts. Maybe sometime you can run into the rest of us. Just a tip, where ever you go, you can draw out more of the friendly people when you wear a kind smile (not a gullible smile, which makes you a target anywhere). It just takes a little more patience to get people to open up in L.A. because they have to be on guard against "those people" you were mentioning.

No, you really can't judge all of California based on LA!! Sweetie, LA is like that-it's full of deeeeply superficial blood suckers. If you want to experience a kinder gentler California, go visit San Francisco, Napa, Bodega Bay, the Redwoods, just about anywhere is better than LA. Head north!! I'm not a huge fan of LA. I'm not in the music, TV or film industry so there's no reason for me to have ever put up with LA for more than a brief visit. Get out while you can, before you become one of them!!

There are some people who want to divide the state of California in half Northern and Southern.... that's how different it is.

most anywhere in california, just get 30 miles east of the ocean and the ppl are normal. get 50 miles east and the ppl wear blue jeans, drive pickup trucks, and listen to country music. the snotty californians are near the water.

You definitely should not judge the huge state of California by LA. I'm not much of a fan of LA either, but there is so much more to CA.

San Diego is a much more attractive big city. There is the beautiful coast and all the wonderful coastal cities in addition to San Diego: Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo are my favorites, followed by Carmel, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Sausalito, Mendocino, Eureka, & Crescent City. There are the beautiful and unmatched Redwoods of northern CA.

The San Francisco Bay Area is overcrowded & full of traffic, but there are many beautiful things to see in San Francisco, the East Bay & Marin County to the north. The Napa County wine country is wonderful.

The State Capital, Sacramento, is a very overlooked and underrated city: the housing is affordable, the economy is good, the downtown area with its tree-lined streets is nice, there are recreational opportunities galore on the Sacramento & American rivers, the American River Parkway & nearby Folsom Lake, Clear Lake & Lake Berryessa. Lake Tahoe is a scenic & recreational jewel.

And finally, even the deserts of southern CA have something to offer, from Palm Springs to Death Valley.

California is an incredibly diverse state. I live in the far north of the state in Crescent City. The population of the entire county is 25,000. Plastic fashionistas? Here, if you can't get it at WalMart, you can't get it. We have 300 foot Redwoods and 100 inches of rain a year. I say this only to demonstrate an extreme. This state has everything in between, be it culture, climate or city size.

LA is a pretty easy place to get lost in. As one person said, "There is no there there". On the surface it all looks the same, the prototype for strip mall America. Dig deeper and you will find one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. Go to events and places where you are likely to meet people you can relate to and maybe you'll find a niche for yourself. If you still can't stand the place (I can relate) just bear in mind that California is the size of many European countries, and if it was a country it would be the 7th largest economy in the world. Surely there is a place for you somewhere here!

Politically Calif is in bad shape and the cost of living is very expensive.
We live in two states work in No. Calif and have a ranch So Utah. They are as different as night and day. That goes also for No Ca to So Ca.
One can get more then a lost soul in So Ca. Sad because it use to be one of the best places in the US to live from affordability to quality of life. Today it is just one step from being a third world.

northern CA and southern CA (especially LA) are so different, life is more laid back in the North than in the South. If you hate LA come live in the bay area (SF) you would love it!

there is a different vibe in california. the people seem kinda plastic..... LA is not that great.....the northern part of california is beautiful in places but i agree that the people are flaky and fake...

No, it's no more fair to say that than it is that California has "nothing but liberals". There are good conservative people in California. And Northern Californians are nothing like the ones from the Southern part of the state.

Generally, California is noted for being the "Land of Fruits and Nuts", and that's probably true. But like anywhere else, there is a remnant of good folks.

Like many other people said, it's definately not fair to judge CA based on just LA. LA does have a lot of stuck up, pretentious people, especially in the Hollywood/Westside. You just need to stay away from the Hollywood/celebrity scene b/c that's where most of the fake, prentious people come from. Some people in that town are so obsessed with celebrities and are always trying to drop names. People come to LA and just get too wrapped up in that Hollywood/celeb crap and it's full of fake people b/c Hollywood and celebrities are fake. But most of LA is not like that. There are some real nice, genuine people there and it's usaully the ones that stay away from the hollywood scene. Santa Monica, the beach cities, South Bay, Los Feliz, Pasadena are areas that are infected with wannabe celebrities. But even in NorCal you can find fake, pretentious people. A lot of people in SF, Berekely, and Marin County are such psuedo-intellectual, pretentious snobs. Instead of being obssessed with celebrities like in LA they are obssessed with politics and activism and act like they are smarter and more informed than everyone else. These psuedo-intellectual limousine liberals that act like they are god's gift to earth are so annoying.

But in any big city you will always find a sub class of pretentious stuck up douche bags that don't represent the people of the state. CA , both northern and southern, are full of really cool, laid back, down to earth people. I grew up in the Bay Area and think the East Bay and the Bay Area in general have some of the coolest people around. I have lived in San Diego for six years and think there are so many friendly and down to earth people here too. NorCal and SoCal are not that different when it comes down to it, they have so many similarities but also a lot of differences. NorCal has things SoCal doesnt and vice versa. It kind of all depends on what you prefer. I love both places; I love the mountains and forests of Northern CA and I love the warm beaches and weather of SoCal. CA is such a great state and you should try living in other parts like SD or SF. Don't judge the state based on LA b/c that city has a whole scene that many people despise; I am so sick of hearing about celebrities and all that crap and unfortunately entertainment is a dominant industry in LA. Try San Diego if you want to stay in SoCal or head up to the Bay Area and check that out.
