I'm not sure, but if you really want to be a mountain man, then find a hidden far away place and give it a try. I don't think living in the wilderness is going to get you a criminal record! Why don't you forget about the legalities (or atleast worry about that when and if, you get asked to leave) and go out there highlander!
The best way to find a good place is to take up hiking on the weekends/free time for a few months before you attempt to stay longer |

No, its not illegal. Just don't break any laws and you can be whatever you want. Generally, you should own the property on which you intend to squat. You will have to hunt and kill your own food and that will require a license plus permission to hunt unless its your property. You will also need a fishing license.
You should find a piece of property where you know both the owner and the neighboring property owners. make friends with them cause they can be your allies or your enemies. |

I'm not quite sure what you mean by a "mountain man."
However, you must own or rent the land you live on unless it is public property that allows you to be there, and if being a "mountain man" includes disappearing and not paying taxes, of course it's illegal. |

Laws have been put in place and enforced by political leaders. You have to purchase licenses to be able to hunt, grow food, fish, run 90% of the rivers for travel.
Mountain men from the past would be forced to run into people and trade. It can be done you just have to plan on paying taxes. In America you can survive in any mountains. Read up on the weather patterns and ways to protect from harsh weather and starvation. Get to know other mountain persons and what they have had to overcome. |

Aren't "mountain men" those in-bred people in the Appalachians? Nah..I don't think that is illegal...just weird |

LOL....you want to be a mountain man and are facillitating this dream by asking questions on an internet forum...priceless. It is not illegal. Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Northern California are all ideal places for mountain men. It is not easy though and your life will suck. Do not be surprised if you find yourself mailing bombs and raping hikers for fun as opposed to playing Halo or laser tag. |

I grew up in northwestern Montana and it would be a great place to be a mountain man.
The Olympic mountain near Seattle Washington would also be a great place to go.
Go for it that would be lots of fun. |
