Is it just me, or is NYC really scary? |
I drove through it only once, on our way to Maine (where we were moving)
and it seemed like such a bleak and dirty place. We got lost near the Hudson River line, and when we asked for directions, some police officer lied as a brush off just to get us off his back, and we got further lost.
It seems to be full of graffiti, rude people, and HORRIBLE drivers.
I had always wanted to visit it, see China town, Long Island, the Statue of Liberty... but it just seems so horrible now, and I have absolutely no desire to ever go back.
New Yorkers, is it really that great?
Tourists, did you have a good experience, or bad?
Or is it all just a dirty city full of hateful people? Additional Details Good answers so far, I just want to see if it's even worth it to go back...
Since we're close now, it's not too far of a drive, and I still want to see it, but not if it's all like it was when we drove through. |

You definitely weren't in my NYC. As someone who has lived many places and often returned back to NYC as a home, NYers are some of the most helpful people. Granted, during rushhour they may be a bit brusk, but really, it is an amazing place.
NYC in the summer is not nearly as enjoyable as the spring and fall. Everything is so lovely and colorful. The summer and winter are a bit rough.
1. Check out Central park in spring or summer.
2. Cross the Brooklyn Bridge.
3. Stay away from tourist traps - like anywhere in the world, the people want to make money
4. Head down to the village and walk around - hit up some cafes and boutiques |

It is great and like any city it has it dirty side and share of rude ppl. You drove by an area that is solitary so it is going to look creepy and there is going to be vandalism. Give it a try you won't regret it. |

I just went to NYC this past week and had a blast. Living in Upstate NY, I normally go once a year or so and it never gets old. The combination of the breathtaking views, rich history, entertainment, and the excitement of the City that never sleeps is a place everyone should visit once in their life. It is a very big city and I'm sure its intimidating, especially for someone who hasn't ever been. I think it probably a better experience to go with someone who knows the area. They can take you to all the best places while avoiding the parts of the city that are less desirable. As far as it being unfriendly and rude... It has those people just like every city in the world, but for the most part I think people in NYC are very friendly and helpful. |

NYC is great. Just takes a lot of getting used to. I was the third generation of my family to live there, but had to retire to zombie Florida. Couldn't afford it any more. This is nuts down here. People shoot each other left and right, people go to court for having the wrong shade grass, feeding the poor is a misdemeanor, raising you voice at a senior is a felony. Crime rate is way higher, and talking to these people is to learn nothing. I'd go back to NYC in a sec. if I could afford it. |

I'm from Colorado, so it's very different from what I'm used to. That said, the people I met in NYC were rarely rude - direct and abrupt, yes, but there were no more rude people there than in Denver or even my small hometown. Most people I had interactions with were very friendly, in fact. There are places you should not go as a tourist - stay with the crowds (we ended up on a deserted street once, and it was eerily quiet after the bustle of the main streets). But you should definitely go - the places you listed are great, and probably as safe as anywhere else. |

NYers are not rude people. On the contrary, NYers are kind and willing to help when you need it.
NYC is a great city, and I hope you will come down one day to really see what NYC is all about instead of driving by. |

It is not just you, dear !
I lived and worked in Manhattan for many years/as a Vocational
Teacher/as an Actor/ and worked for 15 years overseas for
an Organization with its headquarters in NYC
Unless you are one of the Wealthy who live it up in the
finest mansions or unbelievably high rental Apts
attend the Opera/etc OR
Have a well paying job / a successful Spouse who is fun to be
with / go to church/Central Park/watch the people on 5th
Ave/ have lots of settled, secure friends in one of the
Financial orgs/ in other words you are able to enjoy the
good things that a Great City has to offer ===
believe me all of us New Yorkers would like to get out
of here and most of us do------the ones you meet are
those engaged in their day to day struggles to make a
living !!!
And that is always Scary !!
There are always more Have-Nots in Big Cities----
That Policeman you met had most likely been transferred
by one his Scared of his job Superiors---and didn't know
how to give directions but was ashamed to admit it---there
are million stories of Frustrated Individuals in Big Cities !! |

Sounds like you rolled up along I-95 through Washington Heights and the south Bronx. Not exactly the garden spots of the city. Don't base your opinion on the tiny corner of the city that you cut through.
It's not all like that.
I really love this town, there's so much to do and see, and the people really are rather nice. It's a better experience than any city I've ever been to; and I've truly seen just about all of them in this country.
Whenever I go up through that way, it makes ME wonder if I want to come back haha. Seriously, though, there's much more to this city than what you saw. Really give it another chance.
Tip for when you do it, though; don't think about driving around the city, especially in midtown Manhattan. It's much less stressful to let the MTA take over by using mass transit.
If you have any other questions, let us know! |

It's you.
What's scary is getting lost down south. Nothing but trailer parks and yokels drinking Bud Light on their couches in front of their trailers.
They are all sweet to your face, but look out they will stab you in the back once you turn.
REALLY SCARY. |

you must have been in the bronx (no offense to those from the bronx)
queens is really pretty and residential
there are parts of brooklyn (like marine park) that are just beautiful. trees, on the water, seriously beautiful.
long island isn't a destination ug.
chinatown and time square are experiences, but they're kinda dirty and crowded. but greenwich village, maybe tribeca, cool places to see.
new york is SO huge you can get everything you want. it's a great place to visit, and there's something for everyone. sometimes the crowds get to me too, (even though seeing grand central station is worth it in my opinion) so i just head off to some areas that are less intense. |

omg i LOVE nyc. It's like my second love. It's cleaned up a lot (crime wise). people are friendly (despite their reputation) so much to do and see it's amazing.
The only complaint I have EVER had about nyc is the lack of recycling. I had to bring my waterbottles HOME to recycle cause there was NONE available.
other than that. love every second i've ever spent there (all 3 trips) and would not hesitate to go back for a second. |

Listen youre from a different town. I live in LongIsand I agree with you but LongIsland is much more different then the city. I like Long Island because its cleaner there no rude people and its nice here. Visit Montauk and you'll forget about the city. I hate giong to NYC rude people but Its actually pretty safe accoding to a study. and Please dont compare NYC to LongIsland |

Once you accept the self-absorb, greedy, aggressiveness of the city you'll have fun. NYC is all about money and making a name for yourself plus a million and one things to do. Once you come to terms with it, you'll simply love NYC. |

I been there and would never live there. Too dirty for me personally. Philadelphia is similar in many many many ways. The westcoast cities seem alot cleaner and friendlier. |
