Yes i would say its perfectly fine to say dude in NorCal. I would put it on the universally accepted list as with "dude"or "man" or even "bro" also a NorCal thing to say is "hella" like "man that is hella cool". but in all of this rambling.. yes its okay to use dude in NorCal. |

From people younger than 30 its ok! even if your not anywhere near the ocean! I would have to say that dudette is a bad idea, unless you want some laughs towards you! but we all use 'dude' in regular day life here! |

Of Course it is. Just make sure it isn't an old man or woman. It's okay with 30 years old and younger. |

Dude, like, it's not an expression from SoCal. It's been around since the 60's for addressing other dudes. |

It is perfectly accepted, although you may get a few looks. I live in Southern California and I sometimes hear people say "chief" here since they moved here from the south. It just shows where you came from and you are proud of it. |

Believe it or not, there is a larger place outside of california called the world. and in the world people have adapted the phrase "dude" as a common slang term. It actually derives from Texas, where ranchers were called dudes, because the operated dude-ranches. Same goes for the word "stud".
You can pretty much say dude anywhere. |

John Mac from Sac

Yeah, or "brother", those two sayings relate harmony between people in my opinion |

I figure you can call people whatever you want, according to where you came from. The worst that could happen is you say dude all the time, then realize that they really say "bro" and "man". "Right on" is also huge is Sactown. You will learn the lingo pretty quick, and who knows, maybe dude will catch on in your circle of friends? |
