Is it possible to sail from Florida to Lake Superior?

Just wondering about buying a sailboat in Florida, and sailing it up to lake Superior. can this be done?

GOOD LORD to some answers........

Ocean going ships travel the Lakes.including Superior...you go up the Eastern Seaboard to Nova Scotia, up the St Lawrence Seaway to the Wellard Canal around Niagara Falls, then up the Lakes ( which interconnect by the way) to Superior with a trip thru the locks at Salt Ste Marie......

or up the East Coast to the Hudson River; take the mast out an stow it on deck at Albany; ( low bridges ahead!) take the Erie Canal to Lake Erie and there you go; ( check to make sure the boat doesnt draw too much for the shallow canals)

or go up the Mississippi to Chicago and then into the Lakes there.

Many many yachts do one of the three routes; plenty of sailing guides available.........

Yes, I lived most of my life in Michigan and part of it near Lake Superior. There is locks to go through but many people sail the Great Lakes. When I lived in MI one of our favorite pass times was talking to boaters from other parts of US and from other countries. Contact the Michigan Tourist Bureau they can give you the people to talk to. Sounds like fun. You will have a great time.

of course you can good luck though. basic geography, flodia connects to the atlantic ocean, the ocean connects to the great lake lock and damn system. youd have to travel through each of the lake to reach superior. Youd probably want to turn back half way through

It seems like it could be done, but you'd have to go to Canada's Gulf of St. Lawrence and then travel inland toward Quebec, Montreal, then Kingston. You'll end up in Lake Ontario. The only way out by water from there is the way you came in or over Niagra Falls to the next lake. You'll just want to get a trailer in Toronto and take the 400 north to Port Severn or any city on Lake Huron in that area. It's the Georgian Bay. From where you go back in the water, go into the main body of Lake Huron near Fitzwilliam Island. Following the north shoreline will be tricky due to the many little islands and sand bars. You'll want to head north around Sugar Island and you'll reach locks around Sault Ste Marie. This is the last city before entering Lake Superior.

***someone else said the locks around Lockport New York. You could do that. You'd enter at Summerville.and go to just south of Rochester. You'd follow the system until you pop out in Lake Eerie....then you'd go to Detroit and follow the lock system there and come out to lake huron. and then up to Sault Ste Marie like stated before.

you can try, if you can do it then it's possible.

as long as a trailer comes with it

Yes you can sail from Florida to Lake Superior--in fact you can go two different ways.

One is go up the intercoastal waterway and across the Hudson River using the St. Lawrence Seaway. It will cost you to go thru the various locks going around the falls.

The second is go around Fla and into the Gulf and then take the Mississippi north. Go across to Lake Michigan and then north into Lake Superior. (This seems the safest way for me).

I envy your trip!!!!!!!!Need a mate to go with you?

bahamacek
You could as long as you trailered your boat at all the falls and rapids like Niagra Falls. That could get expensive though.

OOOhh, I forgot about Niagra Falls!!

No, you can't, unless you trailer it part of the way.

Yes. You will have to go through the locks at Lockport New York.

Yes go up the inter coastal waterway until you hit the Hudson then take that north.. there you go.

It's a lake. That means it won't connect unless it has a river. Does it? Do you even know or are you going to get yourself majorly lost and should I be getting the coast guard ready to search for you??

Kristy
think about it, lake superior is a lake. you cant get to it, because its surounded by land. you can sail it north, then drive it to the lake, then put it in the lake, but cant sail it fully from florida to lake superior
