I love NYC! Here are some ideas of what you can do while in NYC. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see:
Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house.
UPPER WEST SIDE:
Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West,
Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields.
MIDTOWN:
Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Museum of Modern Art
Sony Bldg
Rockefeller Center
Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats!
Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington.
Empire State Bldg.
The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids.
CHELSEA:
Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun.
WALL ST:
Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see.
THE VILLAGE:
Funky shops in the West Village. Walk through the NYU Washington Square Park. The East Village has some shops from new artists and designers
SOHO:
Great galleries and shops on n off West Broadway. Walk thru to Little Italy for awesome meals and desserts...walk through Chinatown. CANAL STREET has stall after stall of Designer "copies"...bring cash and bargain and watch your purse!
These should put an awesome smile on your face. Bring your camera and takes lots of photos to remember your trip. You'll have a blast! OH...BUY this weekly magazine: TIMEOUT NEW YORK on any newstand to see what's going on each week/day. :) |

Yes definately. I went two years ago with my children and they had a separate room from my hubby and myself and I wasn't worried.
I felt more at ease in New York City than in Manchester City Centre. And I live there!!
Enjoy yourselves and you must visit ground zero and don't forget the tissues. |

Hi there,
My wife and I are from the UK but we love New York and have always found it very safe.
We would recommend:
- go and see a Broadway show
- see the view from the top of the Empire State Building
- take a boat tour around Manahattan
- the food is great so try as many restaurants as you can afford (and don't forget to tip more than you would in Europe!)
We normally stay near Times Square and have always found it just as safe as London. Here is a panoramic photo of Times Square that I took on one of our trips: http://www.360travelguide.com/idisp.asp?iCode=nyc02
Have a great trip! |

New York is so noisy and hot, but for a young person (really for persons of any age) there are so many exciting things to do and see in terms of art, entertainment, trends, etc. I think spending some time there is part of one's education, and from what I have heard, the 'zero tolerance program' did do away with a lot of crime. But as a mother, I would consider such factors as the daughter's age, interests, attitude, who she will be going with, etc. |

It's a long way to travel just to do a bit of shopping. Take her to Lakeside. |

New York City is like no other place in the world, reason why it is called the capital of the world. Safety in New York City should be a concern as with any other traveling location. But needless to say, New York City is no longer the dangerous place it was back int he 70's and 80's. There is so much to do and things to see, it would be an experience to remember. Take time and plan things out, stay in Manhattan instead of opting for less expensive hotels in the surrounding areas, convenience is bliss here in the city. Check out the following link for more information about New York City. |

As a native New Yorker, I can tell you that it's one of the safest cities in the country. You hear about a lot of crime there because there are over 7 million people here. Check the FBI statics and you'll probebly find NYC has a lower crime rate then where you live. |

It is not a dangerous place. It is an incredible city, and well worth the visit. I would read about the touristic things to do there, and perhaps even get guided tours. Enjoy your stay! New York, New York! It's a wonderful town! :-) |

It's not dangerous at all ... I assume your daughter will be doing touristy, fun things at appropriate places and appropriate times. I raised my kids in NYC, they still take subways all the time. There are endless things to do, and it's all wonderful |

YES! It is one of the most awesome cities in the world. Central Park, great galleries, great shops, THE BEST food, etc etc. I've been three times, once on my own, and I loved every minute. Don't go for more than five days though as it's hard to keep up the pace! |

NYC is the greatest! I love it, of course I live in NJ and very close to NYC, but let me tell you, it is not dangerous at all. There are sooo many things to do, see, learn, experience. There is a lot of history there and shows to see and just walking the streets and eating at the fabulous restaurants, trust me, you'll love it! |

It's always worth to visit NY--the center of the universe. The NY now is different from the one 15 years ago, while Times Square was not owned by Disney; real estate did not erode the historical buildings. NY kinda lost it's spirit these few years while all the big corporations plunged in like KMart, Wholefood, Trader Joe, Target etc., those NY never had before.
Surely you don't want to visit a place that look/feel like exactly where you come from. However, NY does have something that other places don't have.
Dangerous, depends on how you interpret it. Every state has crimes and murderers. I think money is more the concern than danger when you travel to NY. |

Yes it is - it is crazy and very busy, but it is a wonderful city and like no other.
It isn't as dangerous as it is painted. It's fairly easy to figure out and get around, the subways are very logical, and there are amazing restaurants, bars, museums etc...everywhere.
Do go - you won't regret it. Plus the exchange rate is on your side. |
