You know the old saying, it's better to be safe than sorry? I think it definitely applies in this case. Bus transport is cheap cheap cheap and you won't get mugged, molested, or otherwise messed with.

Spend the money. Your parents will probably give it to you if you tell them the alternative is that you're going to hitchhike.

Let us know when you are going on holiday, and the date you expect to return. If you don't log on to answers, then we'll know that hitch hiking isn't a good option!!

Seriously, I'd invest in some safer transport, regardless of the country. The last time I hitched was Rhodes in Greece. With a friend, stood on this road for about an hour. Remembered it so well as it was raining!!!! Saw it on tv about 6 months later as the place where a British girl got killed by someone who gave her a lift.

I would not advise anybody to hitchhike, it has to be an enormous risk wherever you are.

I personally have never hitchhiked or picked up a hitcher (except once as a kid with my grandparents, in a small town, blah blah blah) and don't really intend to any time soon and wouldn't recommend it to anyone as a form of transportation. There are some pretty obvious concerns with safety, etc. especially if you are alone and a female.

Having said that, there was a report on 20/20 a few years back where the reporter hitchhiked ( I don't remember if he was trying to get across the country or just a shorter distance) and filmed his experiences. He was totally safe, and with the exception of a couple of places, didn't have any trouble getting rides. Most of the people who picked him up were people who had hitched as kids or had kind hearts and felt sorry for him standing in the heat/rain. It was an interesting piece. There were a few times where he couldn't get a ride, but he, of course, had a back up plan.

So I suppose it is up to the individual to decide if they want to take the risk!

Happy Trails!

its not advisable especially if your female. there are a lot of lonely stretches in mid country and if you intend to go from east to west catch a Greyhound its safer you'll get to LA in one piece

Slow Poke
If you do hitch,do it at a truckstop. You'll get a bunk bed and good company. A car may have to drop you off in the middle of no-mans-land 50 miles down the road. Where else a big truck could drop you off 1500 miles down the road at another truck stop.

WHAT? You had enough of life? Adios , is what I say. It is safer to be a welder in a cramped, sealed ammunition store.

kobacker59
I wouldn't even think about doing it.

No. Just because people are good looking and nice to you at first doesn't mean they will not harm you.

No, especially if you are a female.
Just don't.
It's perhaps a bit better if you are male, but even so you are at the mercy of whoever picks you up.

I am sure that a lot of people safely hitchhike all the time in the US, but I don't think its worth being a statistic. I don't see hitch hikers out much anymore either, not like even 10 years ago.
