That's a coin toss. It saves money and there are usually highway patrol that check the rest stops periodically but some HPs don't let you stay there, they'll ask you to leave. There's also some times where no one patrols the rest stops. Some stops have cameras, some don't. Some are in nice areas, some aren't. It's too iffy for me personally. |

Well the D.C. snipers did it and they got arrested - soooo, I guess it's all in how you look at it! |

Hell no. Not in todays day and age. I live on the east coast and you couldn't pay me to sleep at a rest stop. Especially with kids. AND ON A HOLIDAY WEEKEND!! All the nuts will be on the road. Are they crazy?? |

I have had 2 realitives attacked in rest stops. My brother had the s*** kicked out of him and robbed. My dad would have been, but his revolver changed the attackers plans. It's not worth it. |

I've done it many times in rest stops all over the USA, and never had a problem. Just tell your friend and his family to take common-sense precautions; i.e. roll up your windows, cover or stow your valuables, and stay in a well-lit area of the rest stop.
Have a good Independence Day weekend! |

I've napped at rest areas before when traveling home late at nite. Just make sure you lock your door. Semi drivers pull over and sleep in rest areas all the time. I would park near the front of the building where it is well lighted. |

Heck yeah that's dangerous! They may lose something far more valuable than the few bucks that they are trying to save from hotel cost. Moreover, a lot of towns have ordinances making it unlawful to sleep in cars. |

Not unless you can park between two large trucks with big truckers in them. You could also park near the building if it is open 24 hours. It is still ill advised. |

It may be safe but I woudn't recommend it. Trucks come through rest stops all the time. The endless noise will probably keep you awake. Besides, cops mill around rest stops too. Since it is illegal for you to sleep at a rest stop, you will probably have the highway patrol knocking on your window. How fun would that be? |

If the place has overnight security it probably isn't bad. If it doesn't have security I would totally not do it. |

I would not feel safe at all. You can stay at a Motel 6 for like $50 bucks and have piece of mind. |

I think if you're going to do that you should take a gun with you for protection. |

I used to work in a truck stop and we had many many people sleep in their vehicles on road trips to save money. The point is this, I you park in a well lit area, know the surrounds when you get there...I know there are koa campgrounds or something like it that are free near truck stops that people stay at too. I guess it would depend where the truck stop is and the area its in. I never heard of anyone have problems because truck drivers do it all the time. |
