You can be beaten for no reason in any big city, if you go where you obviously do not belong.
More often you get beaten for your money and other items, but it can also be racially triggered, or just because. |

I don't believe in "no reason". There is always a reason why someone does something. Just because it isn't agreed upon or understood, doesn't mean that there isn't a reason. I think that people in NYC get beaten for many reasons, including: money, jealously, being looked at oddly, boredom, or even peer pressure. |

I'm going to follow Goodache's and Native New Yorkers lead on this.
While there are no GANG related actions in terms of randomness, there was a case not too long ago where a couple of girls beat up a guy on the "A" train for no reason...and it was PUT UP on YouTube! THOUGH I have to say this doesn't happen often.
If this was 20 years ago, I would agree that getting beat up for no reason did happen plenty as any sort of random act of violence.
Still keep alert but DON'T WORRY! The only way you'll get trouble in NYC is if you're looking for it. |

Are there some gang members here? Yes, there are. However NYC probably has the least amount of "Gangs" then anywhere in the country.
NYC is NOT GANG territory, anyone who posted here about gangs is either a kid, does not live here or just not in touch with what NYC is about.
Gangs do not proliferate in this city. They are in a massive minority.
I have family members in senior positions of the NYPD and they will tell you that street crime in NYC is entrepreneurial and not gang related!
I would love to hear the ages and the places of residence of the posters here , who talk of gang activity here in NYC! |

Wow.
I visit New York about 4 times throughtout the year, and I have never heard of that.
My father stays there and everytime I visit I see police walking around all the time.
New York is a very safe place, I wouldn't worry if I were you. Anyway, you could get beaten up anywhere in the world, not just in NY! |

I don't where you got the idea to ask such a question, but I agree with Goodache, this city is not, and I repeat, NOT a gang terriorty. You will not get beaten up in New York City. And the people who wrote in this post before Goodache and I, are either not from New York City or they been watching too many old movies and TV show from the 70s and 80s.
