I live near detroit, and although there is violence, there is just as much violence in suburban areas like clinton township, southgate, etc. It's a tough call for most, because a lot of outsiders look at us as a murder city. ALl we need to do is get the ball moving on the night life in detroit, it can't all be confined to just the sporting arenas and greektown! We need to up the visitors and get some activities roaring because most outsiders see our city as a dump, filled with violence and murder. It is listed high up there with crime, but not as high as St Louis (recently ranked most dangerous city in us because of crime rate increase) and LA is also known as murder capital of the usa. Detroit is truly a decent city, it just needs it's diamonds to be shaken from the rough and we'll be good again. They are making the riverfront gorgeous with parks, new buildings and everything. Turning the abandoned buildings in lofts and homes for people. I think Detroit is on it's way up to being a city people are going to want to come to, and during the super bowl, the city was crazy. people who bashed our city even complimented it's work during the super bowl.
Detroit is a good place, and it's going to continue to get even better. |

I live in detroit , and no we are NOT the worst city in the USA , we had the superbowl game here , and no major problems , we had a all star game here still no problems , it's just that if one person causes trouble the nation thinks the whole city is like that , we do not all carry guns , we do not all rob people , we are not all on drugs , I wish you idiots would pick on another city or state and leave us alone. sure we do have some bad neighborhoods but all cities have them...could it be you're all jealous of our city ? |

It isn't that bad, it has the bad aspects that you hear about, but so do most cities.
There are a lot of great things about Detroit.. |

The actual city of Detroit is pretty much the pits, but the surrounding suburbs are great. I'd say it is certainly in the "bottom 10" worst cities, but a lot depends on what you mean when you say "worst". I've visited many small towns where the police are like the gestapo, harrassing any visitor. So that's certainly pretty bad. Look, you're asking a "value" question, when you use the word "worst", that can mean MANY things, all depending on ones VALUE system. So it would help if you could be a little more specific. |

It depends on people's luck and their definition on the word "worst". I have had my car stolen. I was the lucky one in my family. My sis-in-law and brother(not married) were each carjacked. The job market sucks and not getting better. It's very depressing to look at that town. So many abandoned buildings. Most of Detroit is just ugly. Even during the SuperBowl, it sucked. If this place was in the south it wouldn't be that bad, but the cold weather just makes this place unbearable. Now, alot of the suburbs are really nice places to live in. |

I wouldn't say its the worst but its close to it. I have a lot of friends from there that have moved away and they talk about why they moved. Detroit is very monetarily impoverished, the unemployment rate is sky high, the drug and prostitution rate is ridiculous. Real Estate is not improving much. The mayor's they have had are not up to par so they don't bring jobs and money back to the city. I hate to say it but it's a very depressed city. But then again, most cities in the Midwest have suffered economically because of the factory's and car plants moving to Mexico and other foreign countries so I can't say its the worst. Cleveland and Pittsburgh are pretty bad too because of the factories closing and drugs taking over. |

I don't think so. I've lived in the area most of my life and think that it's getting better. I also think that most "inner cities" have the same trouble that Detroit has but it also has so many positive aspects. |

I have lived in Detroit my entire life, and I have never been involed in any dangerous situation. I don't think Detroit should be listed as the second most dangerous city in the country, it sounds like you have to walk outside in a bullet-proof vest because you might be shot. Besides a few, well a lot of economical issues, Detroit is a really great place to live and its hard for people to get pass that. |
