Is it true that Greektown in Detroit doesn't cook good anymore?

If so, why?

Heck no,... Greektown is different than it was back in the '70s, but it is still a nice place to grab a bite to eat and watch the waiter burn off their bushy eyebrows with flaming cheese.

OPA!

Not Guilty!
It's the same as it was 20 years ago, I usually eat at Pegasus in the old Trappers alley (now Greek town Casino). I haven't noticed a change at all. Judging from your name you are probably Greek, if you are used to the authentic taste of Greek Cooking from Greece then it's always been a little sub-par. Of course when I go with my dad he always speaks Greek to the servers and for some reason we always get better cuts of lamb and a ton of extras for free.

Also stay away from the Old Parthenon.

I think the casinos have really changed things. Greektown, in and of itself, is not as much of a destination as it once was.

THE SINGER
It's been a while, but I would think that like much of the way other things go these days, the best food in Greektown was in its beginning. Back in the 70's - when Greek Town was 'new' - the food, the service and the people were all different. TOday - too much is fast food. ALthough if some of these places are still family owned- some things might not have changed. Does Dot and Etta's still breathe in Detroit? Young's Barbeque?

Pegasus is still as good as always. So is Pizza Papalis and Niki's.

Wisdom Seeker
There is an old rule in restaurants that says it is very hard to do well at BOTH alchoholic beverage service AND food at the same time without one of them suffering. If the food is no good anymore it is because the alchohol won and they have all turned into drinking dives. Everyone has different tastes but talk to the locals on this one. I haven't been there for almost 30 years.

Yes it's true but I have no idea why.

I think the food is okay but the atmoshpere in Greektown is awesome. It is defintely not as good as Greek food in Greece, but what is?
I enjoy:
Mosaic -not authentic greek but great food
Parthenon- good greek food
Pizza Papalis- great chicago style pizza
Fishbones- great atmosphere decent sushi (a little part of Louisana in Detroit)
The Alley Grille- awesome steaks
Golden Fleece- kind of a dive but pretty good food.

It isnt the best food that Detroit offers but It is very unique.

I ate there last December. Wasn't very impressive. It was OK, sure wouldn't drive the 80 mies back to eat there again. I have no idea why.

I've been going to Greektown my whole life and I think the food is DEFINITELY subpar. I don't know why. I used to love to go down there. I think the casinos have something to do with it. In fact, last summer we took our Grandparents (from Oregon) down there and we all got sick. It's ashame.

Happyone
I'm not sure I didn't even know there was a Greek town in Detroit.
