Where I live, they build cities where perfectly good farmland used to big. Looking at the big picture, Las Vegas is the way to go. |

Yes it Is.
Because Las Vegas started as a stopover on the pioneer trails to the west, and became a popular railroad town in the early 1900s. It was a staging point for all the mines in the surrounding area, especially those around the town of Bullfrog, that shipped their goods out to the rest of the country. With the proliferation of the railroads, Las Vegas became less important, but the completion of the nearby Hoover Dam resulted in a substantial growth in tourism, which, along with the legalization of gambling, led to the advent of the casino-hotels for which Las Vegas is famous. |

Um yeah, it still is a desert. Any palm trees or greenery are only growing because of water pumped from lake Mead or really far underground. And Lake Mead is shrinking big time because Vegas keeps expanding endlessly. |

Yes, Las Vegas use to be a little rail road station with few settlers. During the depression president Hoover had the public works department create the Hoover damn later renamed the Boulder damn. The damn is to the southeast of Las Vegas. A hydroelectric station was designed into the damn and lake Mead was created when the damn went in.
Support businesses developed around the damn project and people moved there for the work. Around WWII the town was used by the military and was still a hub for the rail road. Land was cheap and the weather was not bad other than the heat.
Post WWII Las Vegas saw the development of Nellis Air Force Base as well as Indian Spring Air Force Base to the northwest and a Research and Development facility in Mercury, Nevada.
When casinos went in they were well kept and people were treated very well. Top entertainment was brought in from Los Angeles (Hollywood) which was a few hundred miles away. As time progressed Las Vegas became an oasis in the desert with affordable land, government acceptance and a get away from life in Los Angeles.
In the late 80's Las Vegas took on a new approach by becoming a series of ammusement parks instead of the original casino town it once was. They opened up attractions for many things other than gambling.
Las Vegas has some very liberal business laws and has become an industrial city that needs people. Couple that with the affordable land and endless opprotunities and you have a town that is growing faster than handle. Therefore, it is incidental that Las Vegas was formed out of a desert wasteland but that it was become the largest oasis attracting millions of visitors a year. |

Yes, Las Vegas was built in a desert. It is a chicken and egg sort of answer as to how Las Vegas became the cosmopolitan Oasis it is today. The true Gift of Las Vegas came when the near by Hoover Dam Project began. This harnessing of the Colorado River provided Lake Mead and a Gazillion Kilowatts of energy to America. The harnessing of this water source allowed Vegas, A mob city, to become one of the World's for most tourist destinations and to become a legitimate source of clean efficient energy to the West, as well as harness the waterway for most of the Southern West Coast. |

Over, in, around and through a desert. Why? Because it was there. Was a need and therefore it became. |

Las Vegas is built in the Nevada Desert. This was kind of like a stopover point, to get supplies, food, water, clothing etc.. a hundred years ago or so in a small town that was there before people made their way to California or Arizona. |
