Is it true that Los Angeles is just either ghettos or mansions?

Someone told me that once, but they've never even been there. According to them either you're really rich and live in a mansion or you're poor and live in the ghetto. Is that true? Sounds kind of exaggerated. Is there really no "middle class" in Los Angeles?
Additional Details
Let me clarify that when I say "rich" I mean people that are making like $500,000 or more each year and by poor I mean people/families that are making like less than $25,000 per year.

Not true at all, it's mostly middle class, although our upper class is larger than most places. Perception from outsiders can be deceiving since our economy and housing standards are so different than other places around the country.

A Worshiper of JAH
It is exaggerated.
I'm from Los Angeles.

Ooh, someone has been watching WAAAY too much TV. LA is an enormous city and region. It has people of all economic levels, quite evenly spread.

But it also has the entertainment industry and that means lots of self-absorption. So we have much attention paid to their lifestyles. Further, when they run out of ideas, they write shows and make movies about their own overblown lives and lifestyles.

And that is about all it is.

So no, LA is just like most other cities, some rich, some poor, many others in between.

Come see for yourself!

Exaggerated! if people only watch shows like the Hills or Gangland, they'll think that because that's the only two you see, there's a lot in between. People who come and visit stay in the touristy areas, and a lot of those areas are around the really nice neighborhoods, and they know that the ghettos are as ghetto as they get, and that makes them think that there are only two different kinds of neighborhoods.

Wow people have been watching way to much TV. Los Angeles is not even close to that... Let me just say that.

Choc1
No, I'm neither.

copestir
nope

West of Encino
yes lots of poor mixed in with a few upper crust phonies.

Chelsie surf
lol no. There are a lot of celebrities and poor people, but there are middle class neighborhoods as well.

to be honest, yes it's true. Although sometimes there are rich people in the ghetto areas.
