Is it true that new york city residents are very pushy/rude? |
I read on a website that new york city residents "dont have time to mess around" and are very generally busy people (which i understand). I am obsessed with New York City (i live in Britain) and I want to go for holiday, and my Dad said yes, but when he read about the residents, he is edging NOT to go now. I am devastated. Is the website right or not?? thx.x |

I don't believe this is true. I spent quite some time in NYC and never noticed any more rudeness than I experience everywhere else. People are just in a hurry which may come across as pushy and rude. I feel like overall politeness is declining everywhere though. People don't even say thank you anymore when holding the door open for them but you get used to it. Just remember if people ARE rude just kill them with kindness and they will feel bad about it lol. |

they are not rude just straight forward. They can be blunt but not rude. |

I visited NYC for the 1st time a few months ago. I was nervous about it for many reasons. I loved it and encourage you to go!! The residents of NYC were very nice and accommodating. My friends and I were navigating the subways for the 1st time and received assistance numerous times from native New Yorkers. Don't believe everything you read. NYC is great, and I can't wait to go back! |

No, after 911 they have become nice and polite. They even ranked as the most polite city in the world, in 2006 |

Just like any place that has a large population, you are bound to run into all sorts of people - pushy and rude people, included.
However, New Yorkers are some of the most friendly, helpful people in the nation! With exceptions, of course... |

no. I went to NY a couple of years ago and everyone was nice. It is very fast pase. it's a lot slower in Ca |

When I visited, the only time New Yorkers did anything that could be viewed as rude was when they thought someone was trying to cut in line or something. |

I'm from new york, and i happen to think I'm a very nice guy.there is absolutely nobody holding up signs that say
"tourist go home",it's just that at the end of a work day new yorkers come down with a case of the tunnel vision, and just want to go home.i promise that you ,and you father will both have a good time......central park is beautiful in the spring |

I wouldn't say pushy/rude, i would say impatient. You have to understand, while there are a lot of tourists in NY. 90% of the people in NY are not in the tourist trade. NYC isn't Disney World, not matter what Guiliani thinks. There is nothing as frustrating as a group of tourists blocking 3/4 of the sidewalk with their maps out gawking up at the buildings when you are 10 min late for a meeting and you need to get by them.
On the other had, some people in NYC are rude. However, they are most likely transplants from Springfield, Mo. or Decatur, Ga. who though they were going to make it big in NYC only to find out that they can't. They are the mean ones, also they are the ones who will go back home and claim that NYC sucks. |

you can't fit everyone in one box, some people anywhere will be likethat but not everyone |

As with any city there are nice people and pushy people. You can't judge an entire population on the actions of a few people. Go and have fun, you won't be disappointed. |

well that's pretty much their reputation but people that have never been there and ask for help or something they say New Yorkers are very helpful! |

Pushy and rude doesn't mean you're going to be killed! Your dad is unfair. NYC is a great city...to visit. |

Greywolf

They're known for that, but, like anything, it's not true of everyone.
There's a huge amount to see and do there - just stiffen your upper lip, don't let them upset you and have fun.
Your accent will help too - 90% of Americans love a British accent. |

it's the same way as every city. you have your nice people, you have your rude people! my mom loves to go there on vacation and she always has a great time! best wishes |

no its not true. Sorry but your dad is wrong. NYers, and I am one of them, are helpful and kind. Yes, our city is very fast, and yes we are constantly on the move, but we will stop to help out a tourist, and give them directions or some insight to this city. |

who cares about the people. yes new yorkers are generally busy and somewhat rude and always on the go but thats no reason to not go. most people in america dont associate with others anyway but you should definitley go. NYC is in my opinion the most amazing place ever. i went there fir 3 weeks in the summer and i go almost every year. i love it there. absolutely love it and im going to move there one day. honestly i think you should go, there is no place else like new york. OH btw you should go in the spring because the winter is too cold. =]] |

I am a french woman, when I visited NYC for the 1st time there are 10 years ago, I found the newyorkers very friendly, accomodating, no rude, I was riding in the subway and always I received many informations from the native newyorkers, they were very smily with me, don't believe everything you read, NYC is the best city in the world, now I live 3 or 4 months yearly, and I can't hear bads words about NYorkers, yes, they are busy, yes they are working much, all is very fast in NYC, it is not "Old Europe" but is the best place, you must go, your Dad has forgotten that english people are icy with the foreigners. I wish you a good trip in States. |

that is stereotype, not all people are rude and pushy, and they can be anywhere. |

Of course, there are all different types of people, but New Yorkers in general are friendly and helpful. We have to be; there are so many of us and we need to get along. Yes, we move fast. Some people might get a bit pushy, but there's a reason. Suppose the subway pullls into the station, and you're tired. You really want a seat, and you know if you're not the first one in the door, you won't get one. So, yeah, some people may get pushy, but it's only because that's the only way to get anything.
How old are you, and are you going by yourself? That does make a difference, but you really have nothing to fear from the average New Yorker. In fact, most will be happy to help you with directions and advice. |

My friend, since Sept. 11, New Yorkers have been polite and helpful to anyone in need, whether you're from New York City or not. For years, New Yorkers have been known for being rude and pushy, but you won't find that here when you visit New York City.
You'll find folks, like myself, helping a tourist who find themselves lost in the subway, or in Times Square, or in any part of the city get to the right place. I've gotten many thanks from many people that I helped for their helpful advice and/or directions.
So are New Yorkers very rude and pushy, in my opinion, no. New Yorkers are one of most polite people in the world, they will help you out in anyway they can. And if you don't believe me, then come and visit New York City and see that what you read on the Internet is not what it is.
Good luck.

we're only rude to people who are rude first. generally speakin, we are respectul and ambitious people with busy lives, and as long as you dont get in the way of our daily routine, you're cool. |

No! They are not rude. Or at least, most aren't. They just like to use their car's horn a lot, but you have it so you might as well use it! |

That's the rumor I hear but I have never been there. If you go to California, Louisiana, New York, Texas or any state there are cultural difference from one to the other. I have no doubt there are plenty of nice people in New York as well as cranky people. |

I travel to New York City every year. In fact I will be there in 2 wks. The people there is nice, like everywhere you will run into some not so friendly people....Tell your Dad it is not so bad~!!!!!! |

Not everyone is like that, though. It's just like going to other places. There will always be different people in every place you go to. I agree that there's a lot of different people here and one can be pushy when they're cranky or whatever but don't worry about it. It's not like it's going to affect your trip. Just ignore those mean people. |

i live in new york and yes, we tend to get kind of pushy sometimes but it's just because alot of us are in a rush sometimes and need to get where we're going, like school or work. However, you shouldn't be intimmidated by that. New York is definetely worth the trip =] |

No, not in my experiance anyways. I found everyone that I came encountered to be extremly nice and helpful, as it was our first time there, and was a trip that was not planned out well lol. We had a great time. |

Everyone should go to NYC at one point in their life. Yes it's true that a lot of people are pushy/rude (especially during rush hour) but there are so many more that are nice and friendly. But this is true everywhere, not just NYC. |
