No, long Island is the Island in New York. It is like a vacation, because there is so much to do! You have to visit the New York Skyline, shop, go to the shore, and live the urban life. But it isn't hard to have fun, you just go there to find out!

Resort areas

Fire Island National Seashore, which is a long barrier island off Long Island's South Shore, is a hot spot for tourists, especially during the summer. The Village of Ocean Beach is the most populous community on Fire Island. There are restrictions on automobile use and the island is not accessible by car (except for one small westerly portion), requiring passage by one of numerous ferries or other watercraft.

The Hamptons, in eastern Long Island's Suffolk County, is one of the area's most popular summer destinations. Parts of the Hamptons are well known for being a playground for the rich, and are frequented by residents of New York City during the summer months for weekend getaways. This has given rise to the terms "House in the Hamptons" or "Hamptons summer share."

Food
Both Nassau and Suffolk County are host to numerous restaurants, many of world-class prestige. As New York is known as a melting pot, every kind of restaurant, from Mexican to Hungarian can be found. These specialty restaurants are often family owned and are of the highest quality.

Small family-owned pizzerias are ubiquitous. It is not uncommon for a town on Long Island to have several different pizzerias, each with its own distinct flavor. Corporate pizza companies, such as Dominos and Pizza Hut are often utilized to satisfy late-night cravings, but in general, their cheesy, circular bread products are not truly considered "pizza" by locals.

Bagel stores and delis are also extremely common. Many bagel stores are Jewish owned and approved as kosher. Long Island bagels are considered some of the best in the world. At least one, and often more than one deli can be found in a town

Professional Sports Teams

The New York Mets play at Shea Stadium in Flushing in Queens. Plans have been announced for a New Mets Stadium in Willets Point in the parking lot of the current stadium, to be completed for the 2009 baseball season. The new stadium is designed with an exterior facade and main entry rotunda inspired by Ebbets Field. The Brooklyn Cyclones are a minor league baseball team, affiliated with the New York Mets. The Cyclones play at KeySpan Park just off the boardwalk on Coney Island.

Nassau County is home to the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League, and the New York Dragons of the Arena Football League, who both play at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale. The Long Island Lizards of the National Lacrosse League play at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. Belmont Park, whose main track is the longest dirt Thoroughbred racecourse in the world, is located in the Nassau County community of Elmont.

Long Island is also home to the Long Island Ducks minor league baseball team of the Atlantic League. Their stadium, Citibank Park, is located in Central Islip. The American Basketball Association's Strong Island Sound play home games at Suffolk County Community College. The two main rugby teams are the Long Island RFC in East Meadow and the Suffolk Bull Moose in Stony Brook. It also has a professional soccer club, the Long Island Rough Riders, who play at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. The Rough Riders have won two national championships, in 1995 and 2002.

Another category of sporting events popular in this region are Firematic Racing events, involving many local Volunteer fire departments.

Okay I'm going to tell you the truth Long Island is fun but you have to know people over there so that they can tell you the best things over there but also you need a car or a nice set of walking legs to pretty much get around over there!

I've been there, not much fun unless you're going to The Hamptons....The weekend getaway for the summer for us Manhattanites...Definitely not a resort island, don't be fooled by the name because it's alot less than your mind is expecting and you're setting yourself up for disappointment. If you have no choice, hang out in The Hamptons or in Manhattan.Have fun either way :)

No youre not going to have fun. Beaches are crowded with snotty kids, malls have too many wanna be mobster boys (like gotti's), and it's highly polluted.

I suggest staying home!

No, it's not an island resort.
What would you LIKE to do?

We have SPLISH SPLASH water park.
We have two sky-diving joints.
We have the 11th largest mall in America (Roosevelt Field)
We have Camp Hero (Montauk Point - the former super-secret military base that's now a public campground - the SAGE radar dish is still standing).
There are local hikes.
Camping.
Beaches (some of them clothing optional - I'd avoid that one).
We're right next to Manhattan.

Long Island is by no means a resort island. If you would like to have a good time, grab a cab or take the bus and the E train into Manhattan.

Long Island is a middle-class suburbia haven with rich folks living in the Hamptons and on the North Shore. I know I have lived for 35 years in Wantagh, a community eight miles from Jones Beach in Nassau County Long Island. I grew up five miles from the comedian Jerry Seinfeld, five miles from the actor Alex Baldwin and his brothers, in fact, Alex Baldwin babysitted my neighbor when she was young. The list of celebrities born and raised on Long Island goes into the 100s.

Most who come to vacation on Long Island, do so as part of a visit into Manhattan. At the beach I've talked to folks from Japan, India, Denmark, South Africa, Chile, and so on. They visit Manhattan, and for a day or two come to enjoy the Long Island beaches, some of the greatest beaches in the world. If you want to party, the best places during the summer is the Hampton Bays, 20 somethings hang out there all summer, and club hop.

Also you could visit Newsday.com web site to get an idea about local events going on during the time you are here. There are always festivals and free music. If you want to hear music from well known artists, you could go to the Jones Beach Nikon Theatre. It holds about 14,000 and it's situated right next to the Atlantic Ocean at Jones Beach.

But back to Long Island. You must think the word "island" means that every island is like Hawaii or Gilligan's Island. I have a feeling you'd be sadly disappointed once you got to THIS island if you're looking for a tropical vacation spot. Go to Florida, Hawaii or California for a great beach vacation and then have a "Long Island Iced Tea" when you get there. That should be all the "Long Island" you need! Have fun!

There are some fun stuff to do here but honestly it's just plain ol' suburbia. If you want to come here for vacation, there are a lot of nice beaches, a water park, and a few amusement parks along with the usual mini golf and go-karts.

i live on long island. its not really a resort island unless you go out east to like montauk or the hamptons...its so nice out there. fire island is really nice too.

long island is a very populated island which is part of new york. its far from paradise. the closest you will come to cocunut trees is sleeping bums falling out of trees, and the 3 inches of trash coating the sidewalk is like sand.
