houston has the lowest cost of living among the U.S. top ten metropolitan areas. new york, chicago, san fran are 2-3 times more expensive. assuming you live in a nice neighborhood, rent for a 2 bedroom apt is about $1100-1300. keep in mind there is no state income tax in texas, so you take home more of your paycheck. if your income is $60K or higher, you'll live well in houston. if it's $100K or higher you will live very well with plenty of disposable income.
houston has the best medical center in the world, and the economy overall is very good, esp for degreed professionals. the climate is hot and semi-tropical. it cools down for a couple of months in the winter. some people hate the climate. some love it.
traffic is bad all around during rush hour and bad 24/7 in the trendier neighborhoods -- the metro area has 5 million people and grows by over 100K a year, so until they build a commuter rail it won't improve.
houston is racially diverse at its core - the metro area is about 45% white, 40% hispanic, 10% black, 5% asian and other. the city has great parks and world class entertainment. it's most famous for its restaurants, NASA, the energy industry and the annual rodeo which is the largest in the world. |

It depends on what you are looking for.
Houston is one of the cheaper large cities in the US, rent is about $700 a month for a one bedroom, 700 sq feet apartment, $1000 for a 2 bedroom 1000sq feet place. A typical suburban house is 4 bedroom 2200 sq feet for $150,000 about 15 miles from city center.
Traffic is pretty bad, and there is always construction going on on the roads. Public transport is limited, so unless you live close to the city center, you have to drive.
It is a pretty diverse city, with large communities of a lot of ethnicities. I don't know where you are from, but you can probably find a good number of people from your home country.
There are several universities, museums etc. everything you would expect in a large city. The medical center is the largest in the country, so there are lots of jobs available in the medical field. Also, there are many jobs available in the oil and gas industries.
Hope this helps |

Houston is a nice place to live. Especially if you are in oil and gas field.
Everything is the same. Rent, food etc....
It would've been nice if you had given us some idea, where are you moving from?
I would say if you dont have special reason, dont move. Moving is not fun....or come and visit the city before you could decide... Good Luck |

I love it here. Traffic isn't so great, but that really depends on where you're living and where you're driving to. Where I live there's absolutely no traffic to and from work (unless there's a wreck or something) It's got its ups and downs just like any other city. There's great food here. Being one of the fattest cities in the nation, there would have to be great food. Rent is definatly cheaper here than in California and New York. Galveston bay is less than a hour away (although I don't really like going into the water). I wouldn't want to live inside Loop 610 because of the traffic and busy life styles. I live north of Houston, about 25-30 miles from downtown. I love going downtown to watch the Astros or to catch a concert.
It's definately a great city to live in but it really depends on what you're moving for (ie: work, school, family) and what part of Houston you're moving to. If you're moving just for the sake of change......you should probably stay in Houston for a week or two before you set your heart on staying. |

You can find everything in Houston........ I live in the Katy area.. very near Houston. (west end) I love it ... There are parts of houston I hate and then there is home...Great Shopping,, Great Museums and fine arts theatres, great restaurants, lots of sports teams, great clubs, good golfing, lots of traffic, ( believe it or not you do get used to it and find alternate routes that get you there quicker) and not far from Austin New Braunsfels, and San Antonio...
Welcome |

Hello
 |
well why won't you come down here and see for your self but you cannot just go to one side of town and jugde entire Houston cause there is the north side south side west side an east side like in every other place. Well the closer you are to downtown the more the rent is gonna be if you live farther from downtown the cheaper it's gonna be but i say you drive around if you get a chance to come down and see for yourself butlike i said you cannot judge entire Houston by just looking at one side of the town |

okay, it depends where you choose to live. There are the ghetto parts and then the rich parts and the friendly parts. Where to start... well, it's pretty expensive here. I would suggest you move here if you were involved in stuff like oil and gas and stuff cause it's either that or medical.. Umm..there isn't that much to see around here, flat land, it doesn't snow and its soooo hot during the summer. Many Hispanic, so you m ight want to learn Spanish. Some parts of Houston are ghetto and poor, like downtown. Some are rich and friendly like the suburbs of Houston. Anyway, that's all i can tell ya. Good luck with your decision!! |

I had to stay in Houston for almost 4 months, due to a transplant. It isnt a place I would choose to live. A 2 BR apartment was $1200 and up (and that doesnt include bills) if you want in the downtown area. The traffic is terrible...I can see why road rage happens in that town. There are several suburb areas that are nice...but that town has 2.1 million people living there. I would suggest that you go there for two weeks and stay...see if you like it first! |

Rent is really high in Houston--$800-1000/month. The traffic is horrible also; it's as though they can never build enough highways. Gas prices are $2.20 /gallon. |
