Hi,
I live in australia and i have always dreamed of visiting new york city, ive had countless dreams about the place and am glued to movies and tv shows that feature the city.
It will cost me about $20,000 to have a holiday there and people are telling me its not worth it!
i dream of bright lights, tall buildings millions of people and an electric atmosphere is this what i can expect?
has anyone else visited the city? what did you think of it? was it worth it?
After all $20,000 could get me a deposit on a house! |

It's more than it's cracked up to be!
New York is known by some as the "Capital of the Universe," and with good reason: All of the things that make for a world-class city -- cultural institutions, theater, nightlife, educational organizations, dining, and on and on and on -- are available here in greater numbers than anywhere else in the world!
You speak of all the television progams and movies filmed here, and it touches on an important point: What exactly makes a trip "worth" the price? The experiences one has, to be sure. But just as important, in my view, are the memories. Right now, you see TV shows and dream of going to New York. Now imagine yourself a year from now -- after you've taken that trip to the Big Apple -- you'll be able to say "I've been there!" Virtually every time I pass a television, I see a New York street scene that I recognize. Those kinds of memories will live with you forever, and will be well worth whatever price you have to pay.
Will you miss the money? Maybe. But think about how you'll feel is you don't take that trip . . . every time you see a moview with a street scene from New York you'll be dreaming of what might have been . . . .
Go for it! Come visit our fair city and have the time of your life!

I just got back from a NYC christmas, instead of my usual Aust. environment.
Travelling is an opportunity that you must take, yeah you can have a deposit on a house or you can say "been there done that". A holiday is what you make it, if you be negative it will be, but if you go out with a smile people will smile back...well maybe not everyone in NY but there are definitely people who want to chat the foreigner especially if your from oz. Well thats what i found out anyway.
I dont know what your plans are but we did a budget trip, we walked everywhere or took the subway. I find that this way we got to see as much as possible. Its a total culture shock and i loved it. In the subways you can here people singing, then there was the weird and wonderful smells of the people selling food on the side of the street. We ate at a diner across from our hotel for breakfast everyday and for 6 people it cost us $37 and we didnt need lunch.
The question you have to ask yourself, especially about NYC is whether you like cities, if you arent good in crowds and take offence to people being rude then NYC maybe isnt the place for you, but if you look at it as if your experiencing the real NYC than go ahead on your trip, that includes waiting in lines (i kept thinking that i felt like i was a New Yorker cos thats just the way they live).
The choice is up to you in the end, but my advice is go ahead and experience it, Im already planning to go back but look into discounts online and small diners for meals, actually the best advice we got was from our doorman who told us all the places that he eats at or goes to...thats the experience we were going for anyway - feeling like a New Yorker.
Goodluck on your decision and if you have any questions dont hesitate to contact me on Sparky_lass2000@yahoo.com.au |

Forget all these naysayers. I live an hour and a half from New York and I try to go there as often as possible. I'm going to university there as well.
Yes, it's expensive. Yes, it's dirty. Yes, there is crime.
BUT. You can find everything there. Whatever you want, there is always a place to find it.
In the midst of those dirty grids of streets and avenues you will find small triangles, circles, or squares of grass and trees and park benches. And I mean literally in the middle of all that.
What city doesn't have crime? New York is the safest big city in America, anyway. If that upstate person was talking about the cabbies, well then... Yea, they drive really fast, but all you gotta do is look both ways, cross at the crosswalk, and have good reaction times.
You can walk down the street, amid literally millions of other people, anyway you want. Looking acting speaking anyway you want, and most people won't look twice at you.
Bright lights you will find mainly in Times Square, which is an essential spot for tourists like yourself. I've never really been in one of those scyscrapers, except the 80-something floor of the Empire State Building, when I was a kid.
And, yes, 8 million people live there. That's like, 16 times as many people that live in Wyoming. |

I can tell you that NYC is a place you must see......I have lived in NYC and still work in the city and I still get a rush every time I am out and about in the streets doing my job......NYC has its own energy its own pulse....Times Square has an aroma (not of garbage) that you can only smell in Times Square.....Forget what all the people say about NYC being dirty and a bad city its all just their own opinions....NYC is clean and the crime is down..After all its a big city and you will have crime and crime happens all over the world not just in NYC.....Come to NYC and make your dreams a reality you wont regret it...All the lights on Broadway, the horse and buggy carriages in Central Park West near Columbus Circle, the Empire state, the food, the shows, subway..Juniors cheesecakes in Brooklyn Statue of Liberty Ellis island....http://www.nycvisit.com/

I live in NYC! It's okay. It's kind of dirty, but it is nice. Yes, dowtown has big lights. A lot of movies were and are shot here. We have colleges and universities here in the city. Trains, buses, even horse rides. New York is cool. I like the country life better though. |

Native New Yorker
|
As a native New Yorker, I would say that a visit to New York City is very much worth doing.
You can see the whole city from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, take a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (one of the most famous bridges in the world) and take a ride a the Staten Island Ferry, made famous in a lot of movies and television shows. You can take walk through Central Park and shop on 5th Avenue, just to max out you credit card.
Now, It may cost you $20,000 to have a holiday in New York, but if your dream is to see the bright lights of Broadway and tall buildings that makes New York City famous, then this trip is worth every penny.
Good luck and happy travels |

The One Everyone Needs To Know
 |
I live on Long Island in New York state. Long Island is about 10 miles from Manhattan(aka. New York City) and let me tell you, I'm only 14 but yes, it is amazing! I go to New York City about every weekend to visit and sightsee because it is so close and I live in the state. Let Me tell you, it is an experience. It is the most amazing place. The food is great! There is plenty of shopping, a girls paradise! There is Central Park, you can have tea at THE PLAZA or just go to the Manhattan Mall. It is great! At night all of the bars and clubs open up and all the older people or families go inside and all the party people come out and party! The clubs are full, and so are the bars. Its a great place to meet people and have friends. It is so fun! You can just walk through the city for days, there is that much to do. You can visit St. Patrick's Cathederial which is famous or do as you please. New York is a place of diversity and so much fun. It is a place that is defiantly worth paying 20,000 for. It is an amazing sight and when you are in New York you get such a good vibe and you are so happy because you are surrounded by people. It is a really great place to be and you MUST go, it IS worth it. There are also the tall building that you said before, but there are also many beautiful things too. There are bright lights and lots of people everywhere. It is an amazing atmosphere and an AMAZING PLACE. I LOVE NEW YORK! It is worth it and it is great. Also go in the summer or the spring or the fall, because right now in the winter we have temperatures in the low 30's or 20's but it is sunny, it isn't pleasant to walk around though. I can tell you that you will defiantly have fun on your trip. HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY! CHEERS!

Well, I love in New York and I believe it's great visiting the city. But if you don't like large crowds then I don't think you'll like it. But it depends. People here are... "okay" so yeah. Times Square is great! You have to go there if you want to come here. But yeah, depends who you are and what you like. |

Been there. I live in upstate New York, five hours from the Big Apple, and that ain't far enough, cobber. It's cold, it's stinky, it's expensive as hell, and it's dangerous. That said, there are interesting places to visit in the city. If you come, go with a group tour. Don't spend more than five days there. And don't ever believe that what you see in the movies or on the telly is an accurate reflection of the place. It's NOT glamorous and glorious - it's Gotham at it's worst. |
