In population New York City has 7 to 8 million people, and San Francisco has 750,000.
And as far as square mileage, San Francisco is around 49 sq mi, whereas NYC is probably around 400 sq mi. |

That means New York City is far bigger than San Francisco because it has 4 other large boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island).
The entire metropolitan area of San Francisco (including all the suburbs) has a population of 7.1 million. It ranks 5th in the U.S.
The City of New York alone has 8.2 million, with a metropolitan area of around 20 million. Which makes New York ranked 1st in the U.S.
In between New York and San Francisco is 2- Los Angeles (17 million), 3- Chicago (10 million), and 4- Washington D.C.-Baltimore (8 million). |
