I wouldnt say cheap but its not as expensive as living on either coast. St. Louis has very reasonably priced housing and many things that are free to do and see in the city. The pay scales are pretty average and the taxes are not out of sight. While its not as exciting as LA, NY city or Chicago there are plenty of things to do in St. Louis expecially in the urban areas but not in the suburban counties surrounding it. Most people are surprised with the sophistication and the opportunities in the city. |

What daeve930 had to say was pretty accurate. I lived in STL for 26 years, and I can't wait to move back! There is alot to do there, lot's of resaraunts, activities, and the city and surrounding towns are very family oriented and safe. The status of STL being the most dangerous city was done by an independant firm, and they really don't know what they were talking about.
There are bad areas, of course, but that remains true with every major cities.
It is a HUGE sports town, and eveyone has a great sense of comraderie about it.
I used to live in South City (an area of the city) and I paid 450 for a 800 sqare foot one bedroom apartment. The area is safe, close to most of the highways, and it only takes a max of 15-20 minutes to commute anywhere within the region. Not ONCE when I lived there for the 5 years I was there did I feel that I was in an unsafe area.
There are several "cultural" township areas within the city as well. The Hill, for instance is the "Little Italy", Dogtown= Irish neighborhood, Bevo Mill is the "scrubby dutcch" area, and so on and so forth.
Cost of living wise, the utilities are reasonable, as are the local cable and phone companies. Gas is still at around 2.50 last I heard/checked, and the property value always increases.
Good luck with your decision. I have lived all over the country, and I would still choose STL as one of the best places to live, work and raise a family. |

wow those answers above were horrible. yes it is fairly cheap, below average price nationwide. it is very similar to the prices in the new mexico area. the job growth is very good right now, especially in the medical and technology fields. there is lots of things to do, even a bunch of free things, like grant's farm or the zoo (gotta pay to park $8). within 5 hours drive of chicago, indy, kc, memphis |

I wonder where some of these answers come from? St. Louis' crime stats are skewed because St. Louis the city is small, while St. Louis actually includes many suburban towns and a big hunk of southern Illinois.
I've lived in St. Louis most of my life, except for the time during which I lived in NYC. I'll take STL, thank you very much. You can get a 2 bedroom apartment in a neighborhood where you'll feel safe for about $800. There are lots of medium priced houses in the city and county, but some of the city places are going for very high prices. I can't imagine why, except they're pretty big. But they're also old and run down, need all kinds of updating and the neighborhoods can be kind of scary sometimes. But there are many good areas to live. Soulard is a nice area, with old row houses and Victorian townhouses. St. Louis Hills is a very nice area, but a little pricy. Almost any south side suburb is a nice place to live. The city schools have some problems, so unless you don't have kids or plan to send them to parochial schools anyone, you probably want to stay out of the city.
There are lots of cultural activities here. Most of Forest Park is free, although you do pay to park. $8 or $10 to take your family to a world class zoo is not a lot to pay. The food there is pricey, and typical public-kid-place fare. But right outside the park there are lots of places to eat with or without kids.
There's a lot of theatre too. Several local companies, the road shows brought into the Fox Theatre, and the Muny (summer only, seats 11,000 people) all offer good productions for the most part.
I love St. Louis. I'm glad to be back here. |

Yes, it is relatively cheap. City living is the best, you can find really great houses and apts. for a lot less than the county. Food, taxes, gasoline etc are also affordable. Most Midwest cities are going be more affordable than on the coasts.
I have lived in the city of St. Louis for many years and love it. |

if you go farther out to the suburbs...its a little more but its worth what you pay.....go west to like st. charles county....o' fallon, mo was rated like 62 or something in the best places to live in 2006....they also have better school districts and a better enviroment...its also not that far from the city |

Gas is $2.69. BTW I've lived in St. Louis county since I was born and have no reason to ever leave this region. |

It depends. Downtown, Frontenac, Town and Country, Chesterfield and Ladue are very pricy, but South County, St. Charles, Florrisant, and East St. Louis aren't. |

Yes it is a cheap city in which to live but it is also one of the most dangerous in the USA. In 2006 it topped the US rankings for most crime per-capita and was second worst in 2007. The population has long been in decline though major efforts have been made in recent years to revitalise the old centre. It has some great sports teams but a terrible climate. In summer it is classed as 'humid subtropical' (for which read, a sauna in the 90's and it can go well over 110'F) but in the winter it can get Artic blasts from Canada and go as far down as 60 (sixty) degrees of frost (-23'F). It has also a history of some of the most lethal tornadoes in the American records. Having said all that, many people love it - which can also be said of Glasgow! |
