Is texas a bad state?

I was thinking about moving 2 houston but reading on here I heard bad things like people moving their and getting killed months later it's sounding worse than compton is it really that bad in texas. Also what are some good states to live in texas that are good. As far as crime and jobs.

Crime is basically everywhere. I've gone to Houston and have had no trouble even in the so-called 'Hood of town. It's all in what you're looking for. Looking for trouble? you'll find it. Looking for this? you'll find it. Looking for that? you'll find it.

I'm out here in Pride, La and have not had any "bad" thing to happen to me (knock on wood). Yet, I'm hearing about my classmates doing drugs, tricking and causing havoc in the community.

I stay to myself.

No Texas is not a bad state to live in. Like television news the best news is the horrible news as it attracts the bigger audiance.

Your best bet is to go visit where you want to live. Spend time in the area. Drive around all hours of the day and night. Both weekday and weekend. That way you will get a sense of how things are there.

Like with any place you go, there are good and bad things happening there. Sometimes it seems like bad things happen more in certain places than others. You need to do the research. Go to a search engine and find the news sources for the places you are considering living. Contact the local Chamber of Commerce. Contact the Visitor's Center. So many places to get factual information.

But most importantly you need to decide what you want to do and go with your gut feeling. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Good Luck and Enjoy!

No way! I have lived in Houston almost all my life and its a great place to live. Of course there are going to be bad neighborhoods, but there are bad neighborhoods in every type of city and state. I lived in the Northwest area, and for me it was really safe. I've been to Nacogdoches, which is a nice country town, and I'm currently in San Antonio. All the cities are very nice. Everyone is very friendly. If you are really worried, come visit the state, I'm sure you are going to love it!

I grew up in Houston and I love it. There definitely are bad neighborhoods in Houston but they can be avoided. It's mostly gang stuff that's goin on and the gangs don't screw with regular people as much unless you act a fool. Houston is a dynamic town with lots to do. There are lots of job opportunities, and rent and real estate is cheap. The people are probably the friendliest people of any major city.

Austin is where I live now. This is a great city also. Job opportunities galore, young environment, beautiful landscape, great night life, particularly the live music scene. The people are not quite as friendly as they are in Houston, probably because it's kind of a cliqish town, but anyone can find a niche here.

wow. where are you getting all these stories about people being killed after they move to houston? do the math....if that was so prevalent there wouldn't be as many people as there are here. also, think about who those people are, what they were doing when they got killed, etc. there is so much more to a story than simply their location and their death.

ive been in houston a year and a half. i have yet to be killed or know anyone that has been killed either.

Born and raised a Texas. Have visited just about every state in the country and I promise you there is no place like Texas. We have a pride that no other state has. We are completely independent and for years some folks have tried to get Texas to seceed from the rest of the country. We have everything we need to be self-sufficient. Agriculture, water, mountains, deserts, coastal areas, world class entertainment, world-reknowned medical facilities, culture, and most importantly we have lots of land. I actually lived in Houston and if it got to crowded, we just out to the country for a while. Problem solved. Yes Texas has crime, but if you read the newspaper the other day you will remember what it said about the death penalty. We don't take kindly to murderes, rapists and child molesters. We just use lethal injection. Seems to be a good deterent. Immigrants not a problem here in my opinion. For the vast majority of Texans, we accept each other. The only true hatred I've experienced in Texas is a small town called Vidor. Vidor is still living in the 50's. Other than that come on down. Within 5 years you'll be calling yourself a transplanted Texan and saying ya'll!

Come on down, I freakin love it here. I'm 3 hours north of Houston

No Houston isn't all bad. What you hear on the news is always bad, no matter the location. Think about it, how often do you hear about something good on the news?

If you live down town in like the 5th ward of houston or something, yeah it might not be good. There are good parts though, Houston does have it's share of "rich neighborhoods". And you don't have to live in downtown either... most of the better places are on the outskirts of town, Tomball, Conroe, Kingwood, the Woodlands. And I'm pretty sure you wont be murdered... unless you are in a gang or selling drugs.

Most good paying [50,000 +] jobs are downtown, but that is all depending on your area of work.

Texas isn't all that bad... you just have to keep smart, and use common sence...

It might take a while to adjust to the weather, and the way people drive.

I moved to Houston in July and Im still alive!! You need to do your research first before moving into any city. I moved into Northwest Houston and I really like it. It doesnt matter where you live there will be crime everywhere. I used to live in Miami and the crime was really bad there too. When you see the crime going on in the news its usually in neighborhoods you dont want to live anyway. A lot of the crime is also gang related so if your not in a gang your ok. Use a lot of common sense too, if a neighborhood looks kind of scary than avoid it.

I just moved here from CA and its very safe here i think way better then CA. its depends were you moved also if its a bad area then of course there is going to be alot of crime . I lived in N .CA about 40 miles from Oakland and of course there was a lot of crime there just moved to a good area like the Woodlands ,Cypress ,Katy or Sugarland then you well be good .Just remember there is crime every where even in the best cities in the Country..

While I don't live IN Houston....I live south of there. I think what you may have heard was about the homicide rate going up...this was after Hurricane Katrina. I think most of those people came from New Orleans. But don't think bad of Houston because of that. Surely you heard all the great things the whole state did to help the evacuees from the hurricane. People in Texas have BIG hearts. And Texas has it all. What we don't have...you don't need. Texas at one time was a Republic. We are the only state that can fly our state flag at the same height as the U.S. flag.

Come on down and find out for yourself!

There are really nice ppl in Houston and some really mean ppl there too. If the rent sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Try to not live too far away from your workplace. There's a big difference from commuting 20 minutes a day vs. 1 hour a day. Public transit is difficult mostly because the buses have to cover so much distance and plus it is so hot in the summer (terrible if you have to wait for 15 minutes or longer in the sun).

Houston, Texas is our home. We raised 5 children here. It has a lot to offer job wise and downtown is very neat.
To be honest with you there is high crime here, not always so.
Because of the hurricanes like Katrina in New Orleans in 2005 we got a lot of their mafia type gangs and such as that. Then we have the illegals, mostly from Mexico or coming through Mexico. There are a lot of their gangs and graffiti, high drug traffic.Personally I would think long & hard before I would move here. My husband is military retired and one of our sons just last month retired from the military. As much as I would want them to move home, I am encouraging them to stay in Virginia Beach, Va.
TEXAS IS NOT A BAD STATE---HAPPY NEW YEAR~~~~Jill

aj_lets_go_shopping
Nah it's just as hospitable as any other southern state. As far as crime goes, the devil does not discriminate. You can get killed anywhere.

SS LAZIO
Houston is like any other major city, it is the 4th largest in the country so of course there is alot of violence. If you live in the suburbs it not as bad though. Lots to do in Houston, sweet place to live.

mmuscs
There are good and bad areas in every city in this country. Houston has some wonderful areas and some bad areas. I have lived in Houston several times and never had any problems. It's a very nice place. As far as living in Texas.... if you want a place that has no state income tax, reasonable cost of living and great people..... then come on down.

sunbun
Texas is a most wonderful place to live. The people are extremely nice and helpful...I have been here for 5 years now and I came from Chicago. I will stay here forever...

Houston is fantastic. I've lived there over 18 years of my 19 years of life.

People get killed everywhere, not just in Texas.

Houston has VERY affordable living.
