Yeah, it's not bad up there. A great deal of commercial activity, and plenty of working-class people living there.
It's fairly close to Manhattan; it's a MAJOR subway and bus route, so it's VERY easy to get to Manhattan from there. Just jump on the train. Depending on which hotel it is, you might even be close to the Long Island Rail Road, which is yet another option for you.
If it was me, I would feel comfortable.
Enjoy your visit!
EDIT: The Pan-American Hotel is in a decent area, near Queens Center Mall and the Grand Avenue subway station. There's no express subway near there, but even the local trains won't take too long to get to Manhattan from there. Furthermore, you're near the Woodside Long Island Rail Road station. It's not a great area, but not too bad, either. It's a place I'd feel OK staying at, I've stayed in MUCH worse parts of other cities. I probably wouldn't walk around there alone too late at night, but there aren't many reasons to do that anyway, so don't worry about that. It's still busy around there, even at late hours. You should be fine. |

it is close to Manhattan, but traffic could make it take an hour even though it's less than a couple miles away. It is like most of Manhattan (crime wise) there is some robberies, etc., but not as much as like the Bronx or Harlem! Just stay alert and you'll make your way around fine, the subway isn't bad. If your staying at a chain hotel (Marriott, Sheraton, Hilton, Double Tree) you will be fine in terms of hotel safety.
The combination of Queens Boulevard's immense width, heavy automobile traffic, and thriving commercial scene made it the most dangerous thoroughfare in New York City and earned it citywide notoriety and morbid nicknames such as "The Boulevard of Death" and "The Boulevard of Broken Bones." From 1993 to 2000, 72 pedestrians were killed trying to cross the street, an average of 10.2 per year, with countless more injuries. Since 2001, at least partially in response to major news coverage of the danger, the city government has taken measures to cut down on such incidents, including posting large signs proclaiming that "A Pedestrian Was Killed Crossing Here" at intersections where fatal accidents have occurred and installing more road-rule enforcement cameras. These efforts appeared to be successful; during all of 2004, only one pedestrian was killed while trying to cross Queens Boulevard. |

I used to live in Elmhurst close by...
The Pan American Hotel has been around for years...so its an older hotel...although prob. more like a motel than a hotel.
It's pretty safe since the area is always congested with traffic and such. During the day you'll notice lots of kids...since Intermediate school 5 is very close by...at night its quieter...but still had activity...traffic from Queens Blvd...and also PLAY (pool hall, bowling alley across the street)
The neighborhood itself is a middle class ethnically diverse neighborhood made up of primarily latino and asian people.
It's pretty convenient...abotu a 10 minute walk (towards Grand Ave) will take you to the subway...but right on Queens Blvd. you'll find the Q60 (green) bus..which will take you right into Manhattan..(60th St and 2nd Ave)--although you'll have to cross Queens Blvd. (please be careful) Either way (subway or bus) will bring you to Manhattan in 30 min. If you want to take a cab...it's usually (depending on where in Manhattan you are - and traffic) ranges $22-$25...
Hope you have fun...
BTW...I remember like 10 years ago...there used to be a dance club/bar area in the hotel. ..mostly plays merengue and salsa. |

The Pan American hotel boasts that it's the "worlds most convenient hotel", I don't know what they mean by that. They aren't that convenient to many things but they are near the Subway and if you want to get food Pop Diner is right there and the food is pretty good. Queens Blvd. is a major thoroughfare so it's pretty busy around rush hours (7-9am and 4-7pm). You are near the subway (a local stop on the R, V and G lines and they run into Manhattan (not the G it goes to Brooklyn) about 20 minutes away. If you're adventurous and want to see some ethnic neighborhoods near by take the subway to the Roosevelt Ave stop, it's about 2 stops, and go to Jackson Heights. On Roosevelt ave itself it's Latino but if you go up 74th street it is "little India" in Queens. The food is good (I like India Taj or the Jackson Diner) and relatively inexpensive. Beware if you don't like crowds - it's a very busy neighborhood. If you go up Queens Blvd (by subway to Woodhaven Blvd) is the mall area. At night try Play, it's also on Queens Blvd, it's a billards, bowling lounge/bar. There is also a Chinese buffet nearby called East. Both of these places are a little pricey but nice.
In general where you will be is pretty safe and easy to get around. The hotel staff will be helpful. Enjoy Queens |

? don't know how some of these answers are figuring out where you are. Queens Blvd is very long and runs all through Queens. There are several hotels there, some are short stay type's where people go for flings and prostition. Others are regular travelor hotels that are pretty nice. All in all it is safe though. Depends on where you are as far as how close to manhattan you are, but count on it taking about a half hour to get into midtown manhattan.
The other guy is correct though, it is known as the Boulevard of Death, many pedestrians have lost their lives on this street. |

I live by Queens Blvd. and it's a pretty safe place. It's not THAT close to Manhattan but generally, it is pretty close. It's pretty safe to be in a hotel but do not stay out too late because you'll never know what happens! Have fun! |

Queens Blvd is major throughfare and most busy area.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens_Boulevard
This video tells you Queens Blvd can be worst,
http://youtube.com/user/MrHarlemLine
Even it doesn't seem crowded in video, it's one of busiest street.
Most be way to go to Grant Av Station is buy taking $5 Airtrain JFK and make sure to get on Jamaica Train, then take Long Island Railroad that stop at Woodside-61st St, then take Q53 bus to Broadway/Grant Av.
http://lirr42.mta.info/index.asp for Long Island Railroad
On weekend, you could save money by purchase CityTicket which valid to any part of Queens, Brooklyn or Manhattan within city limit (with exception of Shea Stadium- METS games only/Far Rockaway train via Nassau County) for $3 (March 1st, $3.25)
