It is in a bad area (as I said earlier), but you should be safe on campus.
I used to commute, and go through the area to get there (rather than sit at traffic jams where 59 North hits 288 south, I'd exit Wheeler and take that south to Dowling. I'd take that to Elgin and turn to U of H. Let's just say that I was one fo the few palefaces around, and considering the unique car I drove at the time ('82 280ZX in Rally Red), I attracted a bit too much attention. Let's see... I had bottles thrown at me more than once, was called names, and even threatened once. Yes, I carried (but never had to use it).
Just mind your P's and Q's when driving in the area. |

Well UH is an older part of the city called Third Ward, but the school is very safe with their on campus police system. Its a good school but people make it sound bad because the majority of the students commute to school. There is a lack of school spirit and student participation but it has steadily increased. Many of the students get into their choice graduate school as well |

yeah its not the best but its not like you're gonna be out looking for trouble....right? also UH Cooger Patrol is around to protect you. the people of the neighborhood typically leave the area students alone(TSU is a neighbor) |

My dad owns the car wash across the street from UH right next to the Popeyes. The reason why the car wash isn't operating right now is because of the crime and that people who live around there constantly steal all of the equipment and tear the building up. Other than that, that shouldn't stop you from going to that school because the education is worth the slim chance that someone will actually harm you or steal something from you. Its just like any other campus area; keep to yourself and don't start any problems and nothing will happen to you. The campus is safe. |

If you're living ON campus, its fine. The dorms aren't too bad and on-campus isn't too shabby. Directly across the street from campus, though, is 3rd ward (or maybe 5th) and its GHETTO. I went to school there 3 years ago and all I know is what I saw. The houses were literally shacks that were falling down and should have been condemned. I'm not racist, but I wouldn't call it a good neighborhood, that's for sure. |

On campus is safe! The area around it not so much! But they keep security everywhere, and when something happens around campus you get an e-mail and there are post all over! I feel very safe on campus, but like everywhere in the world you have to keep your eyes open and be smart! |

It is not in the best part of town, but like any other University there is so much security provided that you will be safe. You never hear of any crimes going on there on the news.
The University itself is nice and safe. |

It's okay if you're going to be living on campus. Many large universities have older neighborhoods around them and the neighboorhoods tend to get run down over time and people move away, housing prices dwindle and lower income people move in. It's not a ghetto, and there are many good people around UofH. However, like anywhere else in a major city, you just don't want to be out walking around late at night. That's just common sense. |

The Campus is surrounded by poor and low income nighborhoods. It is a great school and if you plan on living on campus I would not be concerned at all. Give the place a visit and decide for yourself. |

If you're talking about the main campus, it's located in the heart of Third Ward, which is NOT a bad area. It's a very busy area, and the people that say it is bad are racist pricks that have never set foot on UH. Don't believe everything you hear. The guy that's a current UH student is right. I attend UH too, and there are far worse things to worry about besides the area. You're very safe staying on campus. On that note, I hope you still consider joining the Cougar family. |

As has been noted, the rumor is true, the University of Houston is in a bad part of town. But the University itself is fine, and I don't see that you'll be doing much in the bad part of town. There's also a lot of people who live off-campus and use public transportation to get to school. I would recommend that you look into this if you're really worried about crime.
Most of Houston's crime does not seem to involve the students. I don't know the statistics, but you should be safe if you don't look for trouble. There are some parts of town that made me feel unsafe when I was there, but that was only after dark, and the University itself was not one of those places.
Best of luck to you, and I hope you get good grades! |

It's in a HORRIBLE area. I wouldn't recommend living on campus unless you can sneak a gun on campus. |
