I am a native Georgia girl, moving to NYC. I know it is expensive, but I have saved for YEARS. I went to med. school and I am now an obstetrician, do you think I can make it in NYC? Oh yeah, i've heard there is a lot of crime there, is this true? Please, only New Yorkers respond and people who have lived there! thanx. |

If you could make it here, then you could make it anywhere. This is New York, the city that is famous around world. Everyone from London to Tokyo comes to live here or experience life here, you can say its the modern day version of the Roman Empire.
Yes you can make it here and make anywhere, and become famous at it. This city is home to everyone from financial analyst to an actor. So make it in New York City will not be a problem at all.
As for crime in New York City, as a native New Yorker, born and raised, this city has seen a huge, and I mean huge reduction in crime in last 15 year. New York City is the safest big city in America. So whatever anyone told you about crime in New York City being bad, is probably because they never been to New York City or has never been back to NYC in the last 15 years, so time have change. There nothing to be worry about, you'll be fine.
I hope this information is very helpful. Good luck with you future move to NYC.

New York is the safest big city in America. This is not just my, a proud New Yorker's opinion, but it's fact. FBI crime statistics back this up. The truth is that you are safer in New York than you are in other, "seemingly" safer cities like Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia and St. Louis. New York's crime rate is lower than all of those cities'.
This is not to say that there is no crime in New York. No place like that exists. But if you use common sense. Choose carefully where you live and work and spend your free time, you will be fine.
As far as you finding employment and earning enough to sustain a lifestyle in New York, well as an obstetrician you'll have no problem with any of that. The medical field is very much in demand in New York, and you're talents will be in demand.
You'll enjoy living in New York, the most diverse, exciting and in my opinion, all around best city in the world.
When it comes time to choose a neighborhood, let us know, and we'll be happy to guide you. |

crime is a relative issue. There are crime areas of NY, just like other places.
More of an issue is if you are an obstetrician, are you coming here to join an existing practice? start up one of your own? How much have you saved? Will your license transfer to NY from Georgia?
Lot of unanswered questions. |

I think you should be ok. |

There are numerous websites which compare cost of living in different cities. I would suggest you do some research as to the costs. However, you should be able to earn more in NYC than in Georgia, but if it is only 10% more than in real terms you will lose money.
New York is like most big cities. There are areas where the crime rate is high and you should stay out of, but most of New York City is safe. I do not know if it as safe as where you are in Georgia. |

Yeah, New York is a very diverse place and with you being an obstetrician I am sure you can find a job in NY.Statistically areas with a larger population ( and culturally based neighborhoods) are prone to having an increased crime rate. Hope this helps... (Best Answer) |

There is crime, but having some basic street smarts should keep you safe from most of it (don't cartwheel nude down the middle of Times Square with hundred dollar bills taped to your backside, for instance).
Whether or not you can afford to live here depends on what you consider a standard of living. Are you willing to live with a roommate? Live outside of Manhattan? Cook at home at least 60% of the time? Walk up a couple flights of stairs rather than taking an elevator? Live in a "cozy" space rather than a big one? All of those things will help save you money. But if you only want to live by yourself in a six-room apartment on Park Avenue and you want to eat out at Le Cirque every night, you're going to have a tougher time.
I probably make considerably less than an obstetrician, but I live in Brooklyn and cook for myself and only go out once in a while; so I'm able to make ends meet. |

Lived there for 3 years,
Ofcourse there is crime. Crime everywhere. But if you make no enemies which i'm sure you won't its a great place to be and live.
You sound smart and have a good job i think you'll do well in the big apple :) |

I would think long and hard about this move. Ny has some of the highest mal pratice insurance costs in the country especly for obstetrician. as a shingle woman your be fine it will kill you if you want to start a family. |

I don't think you should move to NYC. Not because of money, but because of the big spectrum. If you want to go some place urban, go somewhere you KNOW you'll make it.
It'd be wiser to go to a smaller city like DC or Chicago than to go from some place in Georgia to one of the biggest cities in the world. Besides, New York isn't as glamorous as they show for women in things like Sex in the City and whatever you all watch. |
