At first I thought you were just trying to 'fire up the NYers", but after reading that article (is he a college student?), I feel bad for the kid,

I have a kid his age and if she felt that isolated and negative I would do whatever I could to nove her out of it.

now, this is from a native New Yorker, who takes the subway everyday to and from work.

The city is one of the safest cities in this country, the subways, not always reliable, but it does get you to point a to point b for only $2, homelessness is everywhere, not just NYC and so are the rats.

this city isn't ruthless. This city is filled with kind, open minded NYers who gives a damn about their city. The person who wrote that article is a close minded jackass, who should move the hell out.

I was born in the Bronx, raised in the Bronx and work in Brooklyn. I take the subway each and everyday, and I haven't been mugged, pickpocketed, sexually assault or burglarized. I help the tourists when they ask for directions and every now and then I would help a homeless person. Do I sound like a ruthless, demanding person?

New York 1979? Maybe.

New York 2007? Never. Today, NYers have much better and congenial attitudes, in part due to the massive cleanup and police enforcement of civil order in the city. If NYC's crime rate keeps on decreasing at its current clip, it will literally be as safe as London, Paris, Berlin, and Copenhagen within 7-10 years.

NYC is making incredible progress and has once again morphed and transformed itself into a beautiful, clean(er), nicer place to live, work, visit, and play.

I think you should come to NYC and experience it yourself.
Your question makes you sound like you've never been to a major city, let alone NYC, ever.

The city you described is not the city I live in.

edit: That article was poorly written. While I respect that everyone has a different take on this city, I don't think that's the mainstream consensus.

You'll never hear me say the words, "I love New York" out of my mouth now that I live here--but is certainly not as bad as that author is making it out to be.

No, it's a melodramatic exaggeration written by a melodramatic, frustrated, lonely, depressed failure who couldn't make it in New York. There is a element of truth in it, but it's totally blown out of proportion and ignores all the positive aspects of living in New York .

Not to mention, the same could be said of may other big cities aroud the world.

I would love to know where the writer of this article is originally from. Im sure that for some people New York could just be too overwhelming. It is a huge city with so many different aspects to it so people will get different experiences. But if what the above paragraph says is what you are getting out of the city, then sorry to say it but you obviously cant handle New York.

I actually feel PITY for the person who wrote that article. Clearly things didn't work out and all of the negatives come out.

Was there truth in it...at one time, YES. Back during the late 70's to about the early 90's New York was a disgusting place. But after Giuliani cleaned up the city, it is a sparkling place of fun, activity, people and pride!

I guess with this person if he came from somewhere else to make it here, it would be hard. I've been here all my life and would never trade the experience...good or bad.

In 1980 I visited the Soviet Union, and your description of NYC comes close to their view of the entire USA, except that you left out two things I remember them saying--that America had no soul, and that the parks were only for rich people, poor people had to play bocci (!!!) in back alleys. I probably laughed as hard and long then as I did reading your description.
As a native (and proud) San Franciscan I am ready to criticize NYC for many things, but your description is absurd. Anyone who can be lonely in a city of 8.2 million people with clubs and organized groups for absolutely every imaginable activity are psychotics who would fit nowhere. Note that NYC has not had any of the mass shootings so prevelant in the areas ready to criticize NYC, and the one assassination in New York that made headlines was made by Mark David Chapman, who came to New York from Hawaii.
But I have seen mice running in the tracks of the D train station at Cortelyou Road in Brooklyn.

New York is not really a bad place after all. The person who wrote this probably lived their life soo "fancy" and "clean" and not used to the environment but that's how it is in New York...8 million people.

Ahh, I must say it is true, but that's not the whole picture and the great things about the city WAY outshine the crappy parts. I feel happy here. I also feel free. No, it does not have the comfy charm of a typical suburban Pleasantville but it does not have its boredom either. I have more great friends in this city than I ever had living in Midwest, I am able to do so many amazing things and see so much more beauty and culture and art! I am able to enjoy amazing gourmet cusines and experience dozens of countries without ever living the city. I love it!
